Promoting a Signal to a

Shared Signal

You can promote a signal, either to be a new shared object or, if a shared signal with the same name as the signal being promoted exists, to be an instance of an existing shared object.

Note

You can use a batch share action to share multiple signals and messages across functional designs in a function build list. This functionality selects signals and messages for sharing according to user-defined match criteria in the project preferences. See Batch Sharing Objects in a Function Build List.

Prerequisites

• The non-shared message that you want to promote has already been added to the design. See Creating a Signal in a Design.

Procedure

1. Either:Select the signal you want to promote. Press Space Bar and enter Share, then select Home > Sharing > Share from the Search Ribbon dropdown list.

Right-click the signal you want to promote and select Share.

2. If the signal has the same name as an existing shared signal, the Name Already Exists message box displays. Click Create New to create a new shared object, click Use Existing to make the signal an instance of the existing shared object, or click Cancel.

Results

• The signal is promoted to be a shared object and is added to the Shared Objects Browser Window.

• If you shared the signal into an existing shared object, properties and attributes on the objects are merged: If the existing shared object has properties that the object being promoted does not have, they are retained on the shared object.

If the object being promoted has properties that the existing shared object does not have, they are discarded.

If the object being promoted has property or attribute values that conflict with values on the existing shared object, the “Resolve conflicting attributes and properties” dialog box displays and the values selected in that dialog box are retained and the other values are discarded.

In the Output Window, the Resolution tab displays. The table in the Resolution tab lists any property or attribute values in the source object that were in conflict with those in the target object, and shows how those conflicts were resolved. Properties/attributes that may require adjustment are indicated by the value of the Type field being “Warning”.

Note

When you create more than one instance of a shared object, cross-references are displayed next to the instances in the diagrams. See Cross-References on Objects.
