Cavity Component Selection
Rules
The Cavity Component Management automatic selection routine uses a set of rules when processing data.

Upon clicking the Generate Combinations and Select Parts button (in Generate Combinations and Select Parts mode or Select Parts mode), for every connector, backshell, or device in the Name list, the system selects parts for each distinct cavity/wire/derivative combination according to the following rules:
Note
The selection routine does not consider modular connector cavities that are blocked by a configured insert connector position. See Modular Connectors Overview.
Such cavities do not display in the table.
All selections are assuming correct parts are configured in component housing definitions. See the Housing Tab topic for further informationtopic for further informa.
- A terminal is selected if: The Terminal auto-select check box is selected.
A valid terminal exists in the connector, backshell, or device housing definition.
A wire is present in the cavity.
Terminals for empty cavities are selected where the Unwired Terminals Required
attribute is set.
- A cavity seal is selected if: The Seal auto-select check box is selected.
A valid cavity seal exists in the connector, backshell, or device housing definition.
A wire is present in the cavity.
- A cavity plug is selected if: A valid cavity plug exists in the connector, backshell, or device housing definition.
The cavity is empty.
The connector, backshell, or device and cavity are set to Plugs Required.
- Appropriate terminals are selected based on the material code specified in the T/Mat Driver field. This field is populated from the terminal material specified against either the wire end, the connector / backshell / device or the wire in the following order: The terminal material specified against the wire end (on the Details tab of the Edit Wires Dialog Box) is always used, where present.
If no material is specified against the wire end, the terminal material assigned to the wire (on the General tab in the Edit Wires dialog box) is used.
If a terminal material is not specified on either the wire end or the wire, the terminal material of the connector, backshell, or device is used.
If no terminal material is specified at all, terminals with the highest Factor are selected from the housing definition of the connector, backshell, or device. Note If a terminal material driver has been specified in more than one place, a warning will be issued in the DRC Results, but this will not prevent the harness from being processed.
If more than one part is suitable for selection (for a terminal, cavity seal, or cavity plug), a warning is displayed in the DRC Results column. If the selection is not the required part, you must specify the component to use manually before you can process the harness. See Manually Overriding Cavity Component Selections.
A warning message is displayed if the process identifies a ring terminal from a ring terminal family (a ring terminal with child ring terminals configured in its housing definition) and there is a mismatch between the dressed routes of the parent and child.
If you assign a ring terminal with no terminals to a main node component, your selection is preserved and the system will not attempt to select a different ring terminal. Note If the ring terminal does not fit the attached wiring, the “Cavity component does not fit wire” DRC will report an error.
If you assign a ring terminal with one or more terminals to a main node component, the node is acting as a “ring terminal family”, which is treated the same as a connector when using the selection routine. Note If no valid terminal exists in the housing definition, a terminal will not be assigned automatically, and the “Unterminated wire end” DRC will report a warning.
If you add a ring terminal as a main node component, and there are no ring terminals defined in its housing definition, it will remain on-BOM after running cavity component part selection.
If you add a ring terminal as a main node component, with suitable ring terminals defined in its housing definition, the main node ring terminal will not be on-BOM following cavity component part selection. Additionally, the Included On BOM Setting will be dimmed in the Add / Edit Component dialog boxes. The ring terminal selected from the housing definition will be on-BOM and will appear in BOM reports.
