IEC Naming Compliance

Capital offers IEC-81346 Naming Compliance. The uniqueness of a component in IEC-81346 is derived from its name, location and function.

Function and Location attributes can be ascribed to designs, diagrams and objects with pins such as devices, connectors and so on.

  • Name - prefixed with a “-” followed by a letter based its the object type, according to the IEC Device classification codes.

  • Function - denotes which part of a design the components control and is prefixed with a “=”

  • Location denotes physically where the components reside and is prefixed with a “+”

Note

Both function and location can be hierarchically described using a delimiter, usually a “.”

To create and edit the Function and Location attributes see Editing the User-Defined Properties of an Object in the Capital Design Tools - Common Functions User Guide. Function and location attributes on objects can also be inherited from the design, diagram and sector.

The Uniqueness project preference, works in conjunction with design rule checks to ensure naming compliance is maintained. You can choose whether to include or exclude Location and Function from these checks.

Figure 142 shows an example of two control panels containing DIN rails that form part of the air cooling fan component. Under IEC-81346 Naming Compliance their names are rendered as follows:-

  • For Panel 1, the full name is -Q1+P1.R1=AC This can be broken by: Name -Q1

Location +P1.R1 (Panel 1 Rail 1 split by a “.” delimiter)

Function =AC

  • For Panel 2, the full name is -Q1+P2.R1=AC Name uniqueness is maintained as the component has an alternate location: Name -Q1

Location +P2.R1 (Panel 2 Rail 1)

Function =AC
