Creating an Interface Control Document (ICD)

You can create an ICD, choose part numbers, supplier details and footprints, specify roles, engineer assignations, system applicability and select the nets that will be on the device pins, and then save the newly created ICD for use downstream in the Capital toolset.

The information required for creating ICDs is derived from a number of sources. Some is user defined, and other information is derived from a combination of system data and Capital User. Specifically:

• Role — System Object Type Information (OTI) for the device name
• Applicability — System name (OTI), Project and Build list
• Assigned To — Capital User
• Domains — Capital User
• Net — System OTI for net name
• Release Level — defined at System Level in Capital Project (includes transition and behaviors)

Note: One system release level must be defined with 'ICD Editing' behavior selected to enable access to Capital Devices.

If required, you can assign an ICD to a domain or domains. By doing this you restrict the ability to view, edit and export the ICD to only those users that are permitted to access that domain. Downstream consumption of ICDs in Capital is controlled with respect to both ICD domains, and if applicable, library part domains. This can also help prevent unauthorized access to ICDs. Users will only see ICDs for which they have read or read/write access to those particular domains, or ICDs that have no domain assigned. Procedure

1. Click the create icon to create a new ICD. The Create ICD dialog box is displayed.

2. Enter a name for the ICD.

3. Specify a revision number, description, role, part number, supplier part number and release level details for the newly created ICD.

4. Enter a part number, if one is available, to be assigned to the ICD. Click the icon to open the Component Library and click to view/select available part numbers. Click the edit icon to edit the part number details.

   Note: When you enter a valid part number the system pre-populates applicable fields with the default footprint, the default supplier part number and the pins of the device.

5. In the Assigned To field, select an engineer, from the list specified in Capital User, who will be working with this ICD — if applicable.

6. In the Domains field specify the domains that are to be applied to the ICD. User access to these domains is assigned in Capital User.

   Note: If you edit an ICD to remove the only domain to which you have write access, the action will fail and an error message is displayed.

7. In the Applicability field, enter details such as design names and platforms that the ICD is applicable to.

8. Further frames allow you to specify footprints to be assigned to the ICD, as well as pin and net properties and user defined properties and also any associated option information.

   Note: User defined properties can be configured to support data sheets, links, graphics, as well as text and a rich text editor is provided to aid their definition. See "Managing Properties in ICDs" for further information on how to create user defined properties.

9. Click the save icon to save the new ICD. The ICD is available for downstream consumption by Capital Logic.

   Note: If you attempt to navigate from any page without having clicked the save icon, a message is displayed asking for confirmation that you wish to proceed without having saved your changes.

Results

The device is now created.

Note: If you wish to reuse a "Released" ICD, for example to add a second platform to its Applicability, then no new revision is required. This helps promote reuse of ICDs, improving productivity and reducing errors by no longer having to manage change across a number of duplicate ICDs.
