Modular Connectors Overview

Modular connectors comprise an outer shell you can populate with wires and sub-connector inserts (at which wires have already been terminated). The completed modular connector can then be plugged into its receptacle during vehicle manufacture in a single step.

Aero Modular Connectors

In Capital Component Manager, you can create special case aero modular connectors, where the shell (parent) can be defined with cavities and /or positions.

• Wires with terminals are inserted into Cavities. Alternatively, these cavities could contain plugs.

• Sub-connector inserts (for example, quadrax, or triax connectors) are inserted into Positions.

In Capital Component Manager, you can configure cavities and positions to block each other so that one cannot be used when the other is present:

• You cannot add a sub-connector insert to a position that is blocked by a wire or a plug.

• You cannot add a wire or a plug to a cavity that is blocked by an sub-connector insert. The blocked cavity is not displayed in either the Edit Wires Dialog Box or the Cavity Component Management Dialog Box. In the Design Browser, the blocked cavity displays with the no entry symbol .

Figure 155 shows modular connector AMC-0815-Configuration1 that has a child insert connector, AMC-Insert-2p configured in its housing definition. The insert connector is defined as using Position 1, which blocks Cavity 1.

• You cannot insert a wire into cavity 1, if you have added this insert connector.

• You cannot add the insert connector, if there is already a wire in cavity 1.

Figure 156 shows the Modular tab for AMC-0815-Configuration1. Position 1 displays the No‑Entry symbol , which indicates that you cannot add an insert connector at this position because wire W2 is located in cavity 1.

Purchase

Part Modular Connector

Purchase Part modular connectors are bought in as a complete unit with multiple predefined child sub-connector inserts. Figure 158 shows multiple sub-connector inserts configured for parent modular connector AMC-0815.

The Purchase Part check box in Capital Component Manager identifies such connectors, see Figure 159.

When you add such connectors to a harness design, only the parent connector part number is listed on any Bill of Materials that you create. The child sub-connector inserts are not included because they are part of the parent purchased configuration.

In Figure 160, Connector C-663 is a Purchase Part modular parent, and is Included On BOM. Connector C-669 is a child sub-connector insert, and is therefore not Included On BOM.
