Adding an Instance

of a Shared Device as a Symbol

You can add an instance of a shared device that has a symbol associated with it to a diagram as a symbol.

Restrictions and Limitations

  • When multiple instances of the same symbol are placed with different associated pins, you cannot select which associated pins to use for the new instance in the Add Shared Dialog Boxes.

Prerequisites

  • The shared device to add an instance of must already exist in the project and have a symbol associated with it. See Promoting a Device or Connector, Creating a Shared Device Based on a Symbol or Editing Shared Devices and Connectors.

Procedure

  1. To open the Add Shared Device dialog box:Press Space Bar and enter Add Shared Device.

In the Shared Objects Browser, right-click the shared device and select Add Shared Device or double‑click the shared device to add.

  1. If you did not access the dialog box from the Shared Objects Browser, select the current shared object to add.

  2. Click Symbol Selection.Note If Symbol Selection is unavailable it indicates that the shared device has no associated symbol.

  3. In the symbols list, select the symbol to use.

  4. Click OK.If the symbol is not a composite symbol, the symbol is displayed next to the cursor. If the symbol is a composite symbol, the Add Symbol dialog box is displayed.

  1. If the symbol is not a composite symbol, click to place the device instance. Skip the remaining steps in this procedure.

  2. If the symbol is a composite symbol in the Add Symbol dialog box, select the composite symbol or the blocks to use. Choose whether to place pins As Reference, and then OK.Tip See Reference Pins for a description of reference pins. When placing a symbol, you can press R to rotate the symbol or F to flip it.

The composite symbol or the first symbol block is displayed next to the cursor.

  1. For a composite symbol, click to place the device instance; for symbol blocks, click to place the first block, and then click again for each subsequent block.

Results

  • The shared device instance is added to the diagram.

  • In the Design Browser the new instance of the shared object is shown as a child node of the shared object.

Note

When you create more than one instance of a shared object, cross-references are displayed next to the instances on the diagrams. See Cross-References on Objects or Pins.

You cannot resize a symbol in Capital Logic Designer. To resize a symbol graphic, you must use Capital Symbol Designer and then update the symbol graphic on the diagram. See Updating Symbols.
