Creating a Shared Multicore

or Overbraid

You can create a shared multicore or overbraid directly (without creating and promoting a non‑shared object).

Note

You can add both shared and non-shared conductors to a shared multicore or overbraid that you are creating. Any conductors that are not already shared are promoted to be shared conductors when the shared multicore or overbraid is created.

You can use keyboard shortcuts to quickly add a shared multicore or overbraid using existing shared conductors. See Quickly Adding a Multicore or Overbraid.

Procedure

  1. Press the space bar and enter Shared Multicore or Shared Overbraid. The Create Shared Multicore Dialog Box or Create Shared Overbraid Dialog Box is displayed.

  2. Click the Add a new Multicore button () or Add an Overbraid button ().
    The Edit Multicore Dialog Box or Edit Overbraid Dialog Box is displayed.

  3. In the Edit Multicore dialog box or Edit Overbraid dialog box:Select the Default Name check box to generate a name for the new multicore or overbraid, or clear the Default Name check box and enter a name in the Name field.

Select the required indicator type in the Indicators list. If you select coax or oval indicators for a multicore, and want the indicators to have hookups that you can attach a shield termination or daisy chain to, select the Shielded check box; otherwise, clear the Shielded check box.

Click OK to close the Edit Multicore dialog box or Edit Overbraid dialog box.

Note Oval multicores are synchronized in Capital Harness Designer / Capital Harness Designer Modular as non-shielded multicores if no shield termination is connected to the multicore.

The multicore or overbraid is added to the Multicores or Overbraids list on the Create Shared Multicore dialog box or Create Shared Overbraid dialog box with the selected indicators shown as a child node of the multicore or overbraid node.

  1. Select the multicore or overbraid in the Multicores list or Overbraids list, and then select the conductors to add to the multicore or overbraid in the Available Conductors list. Click Add () to put the selected conductors into the new multicore or overbraid.
    Note A conductor can belong to only one multicore or overbraid at a time. Conductors that are already added to a multicore or overbraid are not displayed in the Available Conductors list. However, if you create a new multicore it will display in the Available Conductors list the next time you access the Create Shared Multicore dialog box or Create Shared Overbraid dialog box, and if you create a new overbraid it will display in the Available Conductors list the next time you access the Create Shared Overbraid dialog box.

  2. Click OK.

Results

  • The shared object is created and is added to the Shared Objects Browser. Any of the object’s inner cores that were non-shared objects also become shared objects.

  • The multicore or overbraid is also added to the Multicores folder or Overbraids folder in the Design Browser. The conductors added to the new multicore or overbraid are removed from their original position in the Conductors, Multicores, or Overbraids folders in the Design Browser and are shown as child nodes of the new multicore or overbraid node.

  • The multicore or overbraid indicators are attached to the conductors on the diagram.

Note

By default indicators span the space between the conductors in the multicore/overbraid. If the conductors in the multicore/overbraid are too far apart the indicators will be split. You can use the Toggle Indicators action to change whether or not indicators are split. See Toggling Multicore and Overbraid Indicators. You must add a shield termination to shielded multicores and to overbraids. See Adding a Shield Termination.

When you create more than one instance of a shared object, cross-references are displayed next to the instances on the diagrams. See Cross-References on Objects or Pins.
