Mapping a Function

Signal to a Network Signal

You can map a function signal (in a functional design in Capital Systems Modeler) to a network signal stored in Capital Signal Modeler.

If you want to use the same network signal for different connections, you can map multiple function signals to it. That means, you can have multiple instances of a network signal in a design. Attributes on a mapped function signal in the design allow you to view and edit details about that instance of the network signal (see the Results section in this topic).

Note

You can perform a bulk update action that associates or dissociates multiple functional signals and messages (in a functional design from Capital Systems Modeler) with network signals and messages (stored in the dictionary in Capital Signal Modeler) at the same time. This is an alternative to this mapping procedure. See Associating and Disassociating Functional Signals or Messages with Network Signals and Messages.

Prerequisites

  • The network signal must exist in your network signals library in Capital Signal Modeler.

  • The functional signal must exist in your function design.

  • If you have object type information specified for signals in Capital Project Manager, you are offered the those names when you click the Name ellipsis (…) button for a function signal in Capital Systems Modeler. This means, you are not offered the network signals from Capital Signal Modeler and you cannot map the function signal to a network signal. If you want to map function signals to network signals, there must be no object type information for signals in Capital Project Manager.

Procedure

  1. Right-click on the signal and choose Properties: a properties dialog box displays. Then click the ellipsis button next to the Name field.The Name Selection Dialog Box (for Signal) displays. Caution You can also access the Name Selection dialog box by double-clicking on the signal name in the diagram window and clicking the ellipsis (...) button next to the Name field. However, this will update the signal name only. It will not update other attributes and properties with values from the dictionary signal.

  2. Select the network signal from the table.Note The table headers allow you to sort and filter each column.

  3. Click OK.Note If you have mapped the selected network signal to more than one network message in Capital Signal Modeler, you are prompted to select the desired message from a Select a message Dialog Box.

Results

  • The system maps the function signal to the network signal.

  • The system sets the function signal attributes as follows: Name attribute has the network signal’s name. You can edit this so that you can avoid duplicate function signal names in the design.

Short Description attribute has the value from the network signal’s Signal Description property.

Type attribute has the value Electrical.

Implementation attribute has the value from the SignalImplementationType default value defined in the attributeNames section of the config/systems_signal.json file.

Bitsize attribute has the value from the network signal’s Length [bit] property from Capital Signal Modeler.

Frequency attribute (in hertz) has a value derived from the network signal’s Period (in milliseconds) property from Capital Signal Modeler.

Multiplexed attribute has the value true.

Message Instance attribute is blank by default but you can edit this to have a meaningful name for this instance of the network signal. This is only of use if you are mapping multiple function signals to one network signal.

Five attributes are populated to provide details of the network signal instance: Design, Dictionary Message Name, Dictionary Message Revision, Dictionary Signal Name, Dictionary Signal Revision. These are blank if the function signal is not mapped to network signal.

Note You can run a design rule check “Dictionary signal/message out of date” that identifies where these attribute values on a function signal in a design are different from those attributes on the mapped network signal in Capital Signal Modeler. See Running Design Rule Checks. This means, a network signal attribute has been changed in Capital Signal Modeler but the change is not reflected in the function signal. To fix this, re-map the function signal to the network signal.

  • The system automatically propagates a configurable set of property values from the network signal in Capital Signal Modeler to the function signal in Capital Systems Modeler. For example, if the mapped network signal has a value for a Transmission Rate property, the system assigns a property called Transmission Rate with that value to the function signal. Note You can configure your installation to prevent the system from propagating particular properties from a network signal to a mapped function signal. See Configuring Which Signal Properties Are Propagated from Capital Signal Modeler.

  • The system promotes the signal variant property to the function signal.

  • If the network signal is associated with a network message in Capital Signal Modeler, the system promotes the message name and version to the function signal.

Note

If you manually enter a network signal name in a function signal’s Name field (rather than select it), the system does not associate it with the network signal in Capital Signal Modeler. It does not assign any of the network signal properties, apart from the Short Description, to the function signal.
