Promoting a Function

to a Shared Function

You can promote a non-shared function, either to be a new shared object or to be an instance of an existing shared object.

Prerequisites

• The non-shared function that you want to promote has already been added to the design. See Creating a Function in a Diagram.

Procedure

1. Either:Select the object you want to promote. Press Space Bar and enter Share, then select Home > Sharing > Share from the Search Ribbon dropdown list.

Right-click the object you want to promote and select Share.

The Share Dialog Box [Functions] displays.

2. On the Shared Function tab, select either:Create New Select this if you want to create a new shared object. Specify a name and revision for the object.

Share Into Select this if you want to make the object being promoted an instance of an existing shared object. Select the existing shared object in the list.

3. On the Associate Ports tab associate ports on the object that is being promoted with ports in the shared object definition:If you are creating a new shared object the Shared Object list is automatically populated with ports and associations with ports in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list are created automatically. You can edit the associations if required.

If you are sharing the object being promoted into an existing shared object you need to create associations between the ports in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list and the Shared Object list. Select a port in the Selected Instance or Symbol list then, in the Shared Object list, select the port that you want to associate it with and click Associate. Alternatively, click Associate All to automatically associate each of the ports in Selected Instance list or Symbol list with a port in the Shared Object list. When you Associate All, if there are ports in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list that do not have ports in the Shared Object list that they can be associated with, a warning is displayed explaining that new ports will be created. Either click OK to create new ports, or click Cancel.

Note All the ports in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list must be associated with a port in the Shared Object list, otherwise the OK button will be unavailable and you cannot continue with the object promotion.

Tip To remove an association between two ports, select the two ports and click Disassociate. To remove all associations click Disassociate All. To add a new port to the Shared Object list click New. The Add Shared Ports Dialog Box displays. To delete or rename a port in the Shared Object list select it and click Delete or Rename.

4. Optionally, you can use the Port Reservations tab to set one or more of the ports to be unrestricted. Ports with reservation status Automatic or Reserved are listed in the Automatic Reservations list. Select a port and click Add to move it to the Unrestricted Ports list. To make all the ports unrestricted click Add All. See “Port Reservation Status” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide for further information about automatic, reserved and unrestricted ports.Note When sharing an object into an existing shared object, if the existing shared object has an instance placed on another design that is not currently open then unrestricting automatic ports placed in the other design during the Share Into action is not allowed. Open the other design and try again, or perform the action in Capital Project Manager.

5. Click OK.

Results

• The function is promoted and becomes an instance of a shared object.

• If you selected Create New a new shared object is created and is added to the Shared Objects Browser Window.

• If you shared the function into an existing shared object, properties and attributes on the objects are merged: If either the object being promoted or the existing shared object has properties or attributes that the other object does not have, they are retained on the shared object.

If the object being promoted has property or attribute values that conflict with values on the existing shared object, the Resolve Conflicting Attributes and Properties Dialog Box displays and the values selected in that dialog box are retained and the other values are discarded.

In the Output Window, the Resolution tab displays. The table in the Resolution tab lists any property or attribute values in the object being promoted that were in conflict with those in the existing shared object, and shows how those conflicts were resolved. Properties/attributes that may require adjustment are indicated by the value of the Type field being “Warning”.

• If you shared a function based on a symbol into an existing shared object the symbol is added to the shared object’s shared object definition.

When you create more than one instance of a shared object, cross-references are displayed next to the instances in the diagrams. See Cross-References on Objects.
