Overview of Multicores

A multicore cable is a single cable comprised of multiple conductors.

There are two types of multicore:

  • Shielded multicores — Conductors are covered by an outer sheath and can be grounded with a shield termination.

  • Twisted multicores — Conductors are twisted together without an outer sheath and do not have shields.

Tip

To change a multicore type, for example from a twisted multicore to a shielded multicore, you must use the Edit Multicore Dialog Box, as changing its type from the Properties dialog box is not fully supported.

On a diagram, the graphical representation of a multicore is similar to that of an overbraid; however, a multicore is not the same as an overbraid. You can apply a multicore over another multicore but not over an overbraid, whereas you can apply an overbraid over a multicore or another overbraid.

You can share multicores to add the same multicore to multiple designs within a project. See Shared Multicores and Overbraids. You can also assign a library part to a multicore that already exists in a design, or add a multicore to a design with a library part already assigned.

Restriction

You cannot add shared conductors to a non-shared multicore.

The presence of a multicore is represented on a diagram by indicators attached to the inner cores (conductors) of the multicore. Figure 115 shows the appearance of the multicore indicators included in the Default style set. You can edit the appearance of indicators and add custom indicators to a style set. By default, indicators span the space between the conductors in the multicore. If the conductors in the multicore are too far apart, the indicators will be split when you create the multicore. You can use the Toggle Indicators action to change whether or not indicators are split. See Toggling Multicore and Overbraid Indicators. The indicators of shielded multicores have “hookups” that you can attach a shield termination to. See Adding a Shield Termination.

In the Design Browser, the indicators and the inner cores are displayed as child nodes of the multicore node, as in Figure 116. See Icons in Browsers for further information about Design Browser icons.

You can display the name of a multicore next to its indicators on the diagram:

  1. To display the Properties Dialog Box: Right-click an indicator on the diagram and select Properties to display the multicore name next to a single indicator.

Right-click the multicore indicators node in the Design Browser and select Properties to display the multicore name next to all the indicators on the multicore.

  1. On the General tab, select the Visible check box next to the Name field.

You can also create Single Line objects which contain the attributes of the multicore cables they represent without including the pin connections of each core.
