New Harness Design Dialog Box

To access: Right-click a project in the Project browser and select New Harness Design, or press Space Bar and enter New Harness Design.

Used to register a new harness, including a modular harness, in the database and to configure a number of design-level settings.

Objects

Field Description
Design Details The base harness details, used to register the harness as a unique part in the database and to specify the option codes available to a composite design.
Name A unique label to identify the harness design, which defaults to Harness Design appended with an incrementing number. Enter a new name or click the ellipsis (...) button to the right of the field to select from a list of pre-specified harness design names maintained in the project’s Object Type Information in Capital Project Manager. The contents of this field are displayed in red if they are not unique within the current project. Mandatory.
Properties Click to access the Edit Design Properties Dialog Box, to create properties to associate with the design. Optional.
Part Number Specify a unique identifier for the harness design in the database. The combination of this field and the Revision must be unique within the database; if the combination already exists, the contents of both fields are displayed in red. Mandatory.
Revision Specifies the version of the design, enabling updated versions of the same design (and therefore, the same Part Number) to exist in the database. When creating a new design, the initial version number or letter should be entered. Subsequent revisions receive a new revision number as part of their creation. See “Creating a Design Revision” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide to create a new revision. The combination of this field and the Part Number must be unique within the database; if the combination already exists, the contents of both fields are displayed in red. Mandatory.
Short Description Enter a line of descriptive text to provide more information about the design. This information is displayed alongside the design Name and Revision in the Project browser. Optional.
Description This is a free-text field into which you can enter additional comments or notes relevant to this design. Optional.
Release Level This field is used to record the design’s progress through the stages of the harness-design life-cycle. A number of system-defined release levels are available, but you can create custom levels in Capital Project Manager (see also “Creating a Release Level for a Project” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide). Regardless of the number of custom levels available, they must correspond to one of the system-defined release levels: If no custom levels are configured, the only option available is Draft, which is selected by default. Any custom levels configured must correspond to the Draft system-defined level, so select the custom level required as dictated by your internal procedures. In either case, this is field is mandatory.
Abstraction If you are using design abstractions, select the abstraction to which this design belongs, from the dropdown list. Maintained in Capital Project Manager, use abstractions to group related harnesses together for reporting purposes, providing a “view” of a subset of a vehicle’s wiring. See also “Creating Design Abstractions” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide. Optional.
Domain If you are using domains to restrict user access to designs, select the domain to which this design belongs from the dropdown list. Only users with access rights to the selected domain can access this design. Domains are created and associated with user accounts in Capital Access Manager. See also “Domains” in the Capital Access Manager - User Guide. Optional.
Applicable Options If you are creating a composite harness, click the ellipsis (...) button to the right of the field to open the Applicable Options Dialog Box, to select the option codes available to the composite. Once selected, the available options are displayed in the field. These options, created and maintained in Capital Project Manager, can be applied to the design’s derivatives and to the harness components on the design, ensuring that the correct components exist in each derivative following Composite Breakdown. Optional.
Applicable FM Codes (This field is only available for Capital Harness Designer Modular) If you are creating a parent harness, click the ellipsis (...) button to the right of the field to open the Applicable Functional Module Codes Dialog Box, to select the functional module codes available to the parent design. Once selected, the available options are displayed in the field. These codes, created and maintained in Capital Project Manager, can be applied to the design’s children and to the harness components on the design, ensuring that the correct components exist in each child design following Modular Harness Breakdown. A design can have both functional and production module codes assigned to it. Optional.
Applicable Variant FM Codes (This field is only available for Capital Harness Designer Modular) Specify any Applicable Variant FM codes to be assigned to the design by clicking the ellipsis button, (...), next to the field. This displays the Applicable Variant FM/PM Codes Dialog Box to select the required Variant Functional Module code(s). Optional. These codes are used to control bundle length and object position variance. See also “Variant Length Bundles and Component Positions”. Optional.
Applicable PM Codes (This field is only available for Capital Harness Designer Modular) If you are creating a parent harness, click the ellipsis (...) button to the right of the field to open the Applicable Production Module Codes Dialog Box, and select the production module codes available to the parent design. Once selected, the available options are displayed in the field. You can apply these codes, created and maintained in Capital Project Manager, to the child designs and the harness components in the design, to ensure that the correct components exist in each child design following Modular Harness Breakdown. A design can have both functional and production module codes assigned to it. Optional. Note If you map a parent PM code containing Nested Production Module Codes to automatically generate module designs, the Applicable PM Codes field is only updated with the applicable codes after you run Modular Harness Breakdown.
Applicable Variant PM Codes (This field is only available for Capital Harness Designer Modular) Specify any Applicable Variant PM codes to be assigned to the design by clicking the ellipsis button, (...), next to the field. This displays the Applicable Variant FM/PM Codes Dialog Box to select the required Variant Functional Module code(s). Optional. These codes are used to control bundle length and object position variance. See also “Variant Length Bundles and Component Positions”. Optional.
Harness Group Use Harness Groups to automap valid objects when Synchronizing from a Capital Logic Designer Build List, where Capital Logic Designer objects need to be in multiple harnesses. A Harness Group name is specified for a design in this field. The same Harness Group name can be used on other designs. You must add this Harness Group name to the Harness attribute of the required objects in Capital Logic Designer. Auto mapping matches these Harness Group names and synchronizes the Capital Logic Designer object to all Harness designs with the same Harness Group tag. Harness Group names can be manually added here or, to select multiple Harness Groups, click the ellipsis (...) button to the right of the field to open the Name Selection Dialog Box, to select predefined names. (Harness Group names are created and maintained in Capital Project Manager, Object Type Information).
Effectivity If using effectivity, click the ellipsis (...) button to the right of the field to open the Edit Effectivity Dialog Box, to specify the effectivity ranges that apply to the design.
Diagram Details Use to create a diagram for the design as part of the design-creation process.
Create Harness Diagram Select to create a diagram for the design (you can also create a diagram later). Select to activate the Name, Properties, and Style Set options. Optional.
Name A label to identify the harness diagram, which defaults to Diagram1. Enter a new name, or click the ellipsis (...) button to the right of the field to select from a list of pre-specified harness diagram names maintained in the project’s Object Type Information in Capital Project Manager. Mandatory.
Properties Click to access the Edit Diagram Properties Dialog Box, to create properties to associate with the diagram. Optional.
Style Set Select the style set to associate with this diagram from the dropdown list. If no additional style sets have been created, only Default is available. Mandatory. See “Style Sets” in the Capital Diagram Styling User Guide to create and maintain style sets.
Full Scale Use the following options to create a diagram in which bundle representations are displayed at 100% of the size at which they will appear when printed out. Length If selected, the diagram created for the design is locked to 100% scale. For example, the diagram’s physical scale is locked to the grid spacing and cannot be changed; bundle lengths are displayed at the same scale as they will appear when printed out, unless they are manually overridden. Optional. Modify First Segment Only available if the Length option is selected. Select to apply length changes made to bundles, to the bundle segment nearest to the datum node. By default, changes in length are applied to the bundle segment furthest from the datum node. Optional. Width Only available if the Length option is selected. Select to display bundle widths at full scale, accurately representing the true width of the bundle, as calculated from the bundle diameter. Optional.
Diagram - Physical Scale and Grid Space Use the following options to override the default values specified at System or Project level for Physical Scale and Grid Space settings. These control the relationship between the size of bundles when printed, and their true size, as defined when they are placed. Physical Scale Specifies the real-world distance represented by the separation of two points on the drawing grid, expressed in units defined by the setting of the dropdown list to the right. Mandatory. Grid Space Specifies the distance between two points of the drawing grid as it is represented when printed, expressed in units defined by the setting of the dropdown list to the right. Mandatory.
Cavity Requirements Cavity Requirements — Configures defaults for various cavity attributes when you create the specified component types in the design. Displayed in Capital Harness Designer and Capital Harness Designer Modular only. Seal Harness — Select to force the default setting of the following seal / plug / insulate attributes. If cleared, the three individual options remain selected. Optional. With the options selected, and the appropriate parts available in the components' housing definitions, cavity seals / plugs and backshell seals / plugs are selected automatically during Cavity Component Management. Seal Connectors — Select to force the setting of the Sealed attribute for all connectors by default. Optional. Plug Connectors — Select to force the setting of the Plugs Required attribute for all connectors by default. Insulate Splices — Select to force the setting of the Insulation Type attribute for all splices to Heat Shrink Sleeve by default, and to select the Sealed option by default. Optional. Select Unwired Terminals in Connectors — Select to force the setting of the Unwired Terminals Required attribute for all connectors by default. When you close the dialog box, a message displays asking if you want to apply the Cavity Requirement settings to all affected components or only to those you subsequently add to the design. These settings have no effect when the selected against a derivative or child harness as their settings are inherited from their composite / modular parent.
Modify Harness Details Only enabled when a unique Part Number / Revision combination is entered. Click to open the Edit Harness Details Dialog Box to enter additional manufacturing information for both internal and customer consumption. Optional.

Usage Notes

  • Manually specifying a Part Number is an optional operation for Capital Harness Designer Modular designs. If you leave this field blank, the system auto-generates part numbers based on the design name, partly because nominal part numbers are required to extract costing measurements from the modules using Capital Costing (Labor and Material).

  • You can use the “Design attributes editing” system preference to control when the system checks for existing designs with the same combination of harness design part numbers / revisions across all the projects in the database, to ensure that each harness design entry is unique.

  • The option to create full scale diagrams is a licensed operation; if you do not have the required license, these options are unavailable. Note also that once a diagram has been created to full scale, it is not possible to edit these settings, nor can you edit a non-full scale diagram to enable these options.

  • Full scale bundle widths are not displayed until engineering calculations have been run, as this is necessary to calculate the bundle diameters.

  • If you intend to bridge in external data containing clocking information, the Modify First Segment option must be selected to ensure the preservation of backshell dogleg lengths when making changes to bundle lengths. See also “Clocking” in the Bridging Data In and Out of Capital User Guide.
