Device Connectors Overview

The overview describes the behavior and usage of device connectors in the application.

There are multiple ways to add a device connector to a logical diagram:

  • Adding a device with a device connector footprint directly to the diagram. See Adding a

Device From Capital Component Manager as a Parameterized Device.

  • Assigning a library part with a device connector footprint to a device that has already been created on the diagram, see Object Attributes

and Properties, and then adding pins to the device.

  • Adding a device connector interactively.

Device connectors are graphically represented inside the device and are listed as child nodes of the device in the Design Browser. You can set the Device Connector Width project preference to control the width of device connector graphics. See “Project Preferences for Capital Logic Designer Designs” in the Capital Design Tools - Common Functions User Guide.

The placement of the graphical representation of the device connectors in a device follow these rules:

  • Pins on each side of the device graphic are separated into groups based on the device connector of which they are part.

  • If there are multiple groups per side, there are multiple device connectors on that side.

  • If a device connector is split into multiple groups, each group is drawn with a broken glyph graphic to indicate that more than one instance exists.

Note

When both device pin and device connector pin graphics are present, the priority is given to the device connector pin graphics to display on the diagram.

The names of the device connectors do not have to be unique on a diagram. For example, a connector J1 on a device DEV1 is different to a connector J1 on a device DEV2.

You can move pins and swap their positions on the device on the diagram. See Moving Pins. For devices with associated library parts, the pin type (normal or stud) for each pin on the connector is taken from the library part definition for the device. Conductors connect to the device pin and therefore keep the internal mapping separate to the external mapping.

For devices with library parts, note the following:

  • You can add properties to a device connector but any properties that have come from the Capital Component Manager definition of the connector are not editable in Capital Logic Designer.

  • If the footprint for the device is changed in Capital Component Manager, the device connector instance in Capital Logic Designer is updated only if you refresh the library part data in Capital Logic Designer. Press the space bar and enter Refresh Library Parts, and then right‑click the instance of the device and select Update Part.

  • If the library part for the device connector or the footprint is changed in Capital Component Manager, an update in Capital Logic Designer is possible only if the symbol for the device’s library part is the same.

  • Devices that currently have a library part with a symbol will restrict the selection of a new library part to only those library parts that use the same symbol.

There is a project preference to define whether the device pin names or the device connector pin names are displayed on diagrams in Capital Logic Designer. This cannot be defined individually for each device instance. See “Project Preferences for Capital Logic Designer Designs” in the Capital Design Tools - Common Functions User Guide.

Note

If you add a device connector using a device library part with a footprint, the device pins will be named to match those of the device connector pins.

There is also a project preference to enforce the merging of a device with a device connector, when it is being shared into an already shared device. With the preference selected, device connectors are merged based on the following rule criteria:

  • Device connectors must have the same name.

  • Device connectors must have the same part number assigned (or no part number assigned).

  • Different device pins must be mapped to different cavities of device connector.
