Adding an Instance of a Shared Function as a Parameterized Object

You can add an instance of a shared function to a diagram as a parameterized object.

Prerequisites

• The shared function that you want to add an instance of must already exist in the project. See Promoting a Function to a Shared Function.

Procedure

1. Either:Press Space Bar and enter Add Shared Function.

In the Shared Objects Browser Window either: Right-click the shared function you want to add an instance of and select Add Shared Function.

Double-click the function you want to add an instance of.

The Add Shared Function Dialog Box displays.

2. If you did not access the dialog box via the Shared Objects Browser Window, select the current shared object that you want to add an instance of.

3. If you are adding an instance of a shared function that has a symbol associated with it, select Port Selection.

4. In the Select Ports table, select the ports you want to place on the object. To select multiple ports hold down the Ctrl key while selecting. If you choose to place ports individually, when you are placing ports on the diagram they will appear in the order in which you selected them in the table.

5. Choose whether you want to place ports Individually or As Group, or select Auto-Generate. Click OK.The cursor changes to .

6. Either:If you selected Auto-Generate, click where you want to place the object instance.

If you did not select Auto-Generate, click where you want to place the first corner of the object instance. Move the cursor to where you want to place the opposite corner of the object instance. A shadow box appears indicating where the instance will be added and a tooltip indicates the width of the instance and the number of ports that can fit on it. Click where you want to place the opposite corner of the object instance.

Tip If you did not select Auto-Generate, you can rotate a function instance you are placing by pressing R on the keyboard after clicking to place the first corner of the instance. Once you have placed the instance the object name will be displayed vertically to the right of the instance.

If you selected Auto-Generate, the ports are placed on the object instance automatically. Skip the remaining steps in this procedure. If you did not select Auto-Generate: The cursor changes to .

Circles indicate locations on the object instance where you can place the port(s) and dotted gray lines/boxes indicate locations outside the object instance where you can place the port(s).

7. If you are placing ports individually move the cursor over the location where you want to place a port. If you are placing ports as a group move the cursor over the location where you want to place the first port of the group.The cursor changes to .

8. Click to place the port(s).

9. If you are placing multiple ports individually, repeat Steps 7 and 8.

Results

• The shared object instance is added to the diagram. The instance stretches to include any ports placed outside its boundaries.

• In the Design Browser Window the new instance of the shared object is shown as a child node of the shared object.

When you create more than one instance of a shared object, cross-references are displayed next to the instances in the diagram. See Cross-References on Objects.
