Importing User Data

This topic explains how to import users, domains, roles and user groups (otherwise known as user administration data or security data) that have been exported in an XML file from an installation of Capital.

Note

In order to do this, your user account must have the Import Security Data permission (listed under Security Data on the Permissions tab of the Edit User Account Dialog). See Assigning and Editing Permissions and Change Policies on a User Account for more information about assigning permissions to a user account.

Procedure

1. Select File > Import User Administration Data.The Import Dialog is displayed.

2. Navigate to the XML file containing the data that you want to import and click Import.

3. A message confirms that the data was imported successfully.Note If the import fails due to the data file being corrupt, the import will stop with no user data imported.

The import process merges the imported data with the existing data in the database:

If object exists in the system already

User

Existing user information is updated with imported data and granted the imported user permissions.

New user is created.

Domain

Existing domain is updated with imported domain description.

New domain is created.

Role

Existing role is granted with the imported permissions.

New role is created.

User Group

Existing user group is updated so that it has the users in the imported data added to it.

New user group is created and the appropriate users are added to it.

License Policy

Existing license policy is overwritten with the contents of the imported policy. They are not merged.

New license policy is created.

Note If you are importing user data from an external authentication system using simple text passwords (unencrypted), the import will check the value of the ‘isplainpassword’ field. If it is set to true, the import will validate and encrypt the text in the ‘password’ field. See the WebServiceDevelopment.pdf document in the doc/webservice folder of your Capital installation for more information.
