Plug Variance Management
When choosing to generate production technical variants for candidate parent modules containing plugged connectors, you have the option to include the presence of cavity plugs in the variant calculation.
You configure the option on a “connector by connector” basis using the Plug Variance Management Dialog Box. Any settings you configure are applicable to both the simulate variations and the full variant module generation processes.
With this option configured, the generation process considers the presence (or not) of all wires and their codes that are terminated in the connector, as opposed to just the wires present in the candidate parent module input set. Where a wire is not present in a cavity, the generation process includes blanking plugs in the variance calculations.
You can use this functionality in conjunction with the Simulate Variations functionality (see Module Explorer Dialog Box) to quickly identify the variance based on the inclusion (or not) of blanking plugs on any of the plugged connectors in your candidate parent module.
- If you decide the variance is too high, you can choose not to include plugs in the variant generation, or re-work the content of your candidate parent module.
This video demonstrates the flow.
In Figure 434, the variant generation process has calculated eight variants based on the connector and wires shown.

If you remove the DVD wire from the candidate production module and regenerate the variants, the process calculates four variants as in Figure 435.

If you configure plug variance as in Figure 436, and regenerate the variants, the process calculates eight variants as in Figure 437. This is because the process considers the presence (or not) of blanking plugs in the DVD cavity.

You can also configure plug variance at an individual cavity level. In the following examples, all wires apart from the Core are removed from the candidate input set. Plug variance is set for the NAV wires.

However, plug variance has been turned off at the individual cavity level for the DVD and HDD wires (Figure 438). This means that neither the wires nor plugs are included in the variance calculations. As a result, only two variants are created by the generation process.
