Using the ICD Definition to Create Library Parts

Once a device has been created and had its properties specified, it is possible to save this definition back into your library, for subsequent re-use, as a new component.

This offers a number of benefits: it allows for rapid part creation, as well as reducing errors by reusing previously specified definitions. It also provides for a unified location for component engineers containing both the Library and ICD data. Librarians can take all the information entered by Component Engineers and persist this into new Library parts. This ensures accuracy and prevents translation errors, incorrect data entry and missing or incomplete information. It also saves time as Librarians no longer have to obtain I/O and device connector details when creating new components.

Prerequisites

A new, fully specified component has been created and saved in Capital Devices.

Procedure

1. Select the Create Component from ICD button on the ribbon.

   Note: The Create Component from ICD action is only enabled for valid, saved ICDs that do not have a part number or backshell definition already assigned.

2. The Create Component from ICD dialog box is displayed. Enter a part number and revision in the relevant fields.

3. The system creates the part and populates the ICD, assigning it with the newly created part number.

When viewed in the Component Library all information created by the Component Engineer and saved by the Librarian is persisted into the ICD. The type code is either derived from the ICD if one was assigned, or set to default if blank. Color and material codes are also set to defaults.
