Terminal Blocks Overview

Terminal blocks are used to make connections by clamping wires in place, typically using screws. Terminals blocks are used extensively in the machinery and other sectors to connect equipment to power supply or control circuits. In the Capital software, terminal blocks are represented as devices.

Terminal blocks are special types of devices that include:

  • One pin for each wire insertion point.

  • Internal connectivity.

  • Can have other devices terminated into them (such as jumpers).

A terminal strip is an assembly of individual terminal blocks. See Creating a Terminal Strip.

Jumpers are devices which have multiple legs that are ‘inserted’ into terminal blocks to make their pins equipotential.

Schematic Representation

  • Terminal blocks are represented on diagrams as white-filled circles with a number of wires terminating on the same point. Figure 27: Terminal Block on a Diagram Terminal block symbols are created in Capital Symbol Designer. You create the symbol with pins laid on top of each other and internal links between them defining the internal construction of the block. See “Adding a Pin to a Symbol” in the Capital Symbol Designer User Guide. Figure 28: Terminal Block Symbol Construction

  • Jumpers are modeled as composite symbols that offer equipotential definition between legs (each being a symbol block in the composite) while permitting each leg to move freely with the terminal into which it is inserted to give flexibility to the placement of the terminal block on the diagram.
