Axial Dimensions

You use axial dimensions for point to point measurements between objects at nodes, symbol datums and dimension nodes, on both full and non-full scale diagrams.

This video shows how you can use axial dimensions.

Axial dimensions on full scale diagrams display the physical drawing length between the two selected points.

Note

Use the styling attribute decoration LengthValue to format the display of the axial length to the required number of decimal digits.

Axial dimensions on non-full scale diagrams display either:

  • The sum of the shortest total bundle length between the two selected points Figure 262: Axial Y Dimension on Non-Full Scale Diagram or

  • If one of the selected points is a symbol datum, you are prompted to specify the distance because dimensions to points on an object that are not associated with a node can not be calculated automatically. To display the dimension, you must enter the dimension value manually. See “Dimension Length Calculation Methods” for how dimension distances are calculated.

You can display three types of axial dimension:

  • Axial X dimension — Distance between two objects along the X axis of the harness. See Figure 263. Figure 263: Axial X Dimension on Full Scale Diagram

  • Axial Y dimension — Distance between two objects along the Y axis of the harness. See Figure 264. Figure 264: Axial Y Dimension on Full Scale Diagram

  • Axial XY dimension — Distance between two objects along an axis of the harness that you can specify. See Figure 265. Figure 265: Axial XY Dimension on Full Scale Diagram

Note

On non-full scale diagram, you cannot create an axial dimension between two disconnected nodes. Similarly, if you make topology changes (such as node or bundle deletion) that result in the start/end points of an existing axial dimension becoming disconnected, the system automatically deletes the dimension.

If you delete an axial dimension (on a full or non-full scale diagram) that points to a Dimension Node, the node is automatically deleted. The following are example actions that you could make which would result in an axial dimension being deleted:

  • Delete node component

  • Delete dimension or dimension node

  • Disconnect/delete bundle

  • Merge bundle

  • Move component

  • Update symbol

  • Straighten bundle

Symbol

Datums

You can display axial dimensions to/from the following types of symbol datum:

  • Front

  • Back

  • Tip.Term

  • Generic

  • Drill Point

  • Fixture Placement

The bundle axis, and not the symbol datum itself, is used by the system as the reference when the dimension is created or flipped. When the system creates the dimension, the offset distance is measured from the bundle, not from the datum.

Hold Shift while placing the axial dimension node to temporarily disable snapping to the nearest node or symbol datum, allowing for greater precision when placing the dimension at an offset.
