Associating

a Symbol With a Shared Device or Connector

You can add a symbol to the shared object definition of an existing shared device, plug, jack, inline, or ring terminal.

Tip

To associate a symbol with a shared device, as an alternative to Steps 1 to 3 of this procedure, you can follow Steps 1 to 2 in Creating a Shared Device Based on a Symbol, but, at Step 2, select Share Into and select the shared object to associate a symbol with in the list, and then follow Step 4 onwards in this procedure, on the Associate Pins tab in the Create Shared Device Dialog Box.

Procedure

1. Right-click the shared device, plug, jack, ring terminal, or one side of the shared inline to associate a symbol with and select Edit Shared device or connector.Note To associate a symbol with a shared inline, right‑click the plug or the jack, do not select both sides of the inline.

The Edit Shared device or connector dialog box is displayed. See Edit Shared Dialog Boxes.

2. Select the Symbols tab and click Add.Note You can only associate one symbol with a shared plug, jack, inline, or ring terminal. If there is a symbol already associated, the Add button is not available. To replace the existing symbol, select it in the list and click Remove, and then click Add. If there are no available symbols to add to the shared device or connector, the Symbols tab is not displayed.

The Select Symbol to Add dialog box is displayed.

3. In the Select Symbol to Add dialog box, select the required symbol in the tree and click OK.Tip In the Select Symbol to Add dialog box, you can select Show Origin to display the symbol origin on the symbol.

4. On the Associate Pins tab, associate pins on the symbol with pins in the shared object definition. Select a pin in the Symbol list, select the pin to associate it with in the Shared Object list, and then click Associate. Alternatively, click Associate All to automatically associate all pins in the two lists. When you Associate All, if there are pins in the Symbol list that do not have pins in the Shared Object list that they can be associated with, a message is displayed to warn that new pins will be created. Click OK to create new pins, or click Cancel.Note All the pins in the Symbol list must be associated with a pin in the Shared Object list, otherwise the OK button is unavailable and you cannot continue associating the symbol with the shared object. Unless you have selected a symbol in the symbols list or just added a symbol to the symbols list, the Pins tab is displayed instead of the Associate Pins tab.

Tip To remove an association between two pins, select the two pins and click Disassociate. To remove all associations click Disassociate All. To add a new pin to the Shared Object list, click New. The Add Shared Pins Dialog Box is displayed. To delete or rename a pin in the Shared Object list, select it and click Delete or Rename.

5. Optionally, you can use the Pin Reservations tab to set one or more of the pins to be unrestricted. Pins with reservation status Automatic or Reserved are listed in the Automatic Reservations list. Select a pin and click Add to move it to the Unrestricted Pins list. To make all the pins unrestricted, click Add All. See “Pin Reservation Status” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide for automatic, reserved, and unrestricted pins.Note When adding a symbol to an existing shared object using the Create Shared Device Dialog Box. If the existing shared object has an instance placed on another design that is not currently open, unrestricting automatic pins placed in the other design during the Share Into action is not permitted. Open the other design and try again, or perform the action in Capital Project Manager.

6. Click OK.

Results

• The symbol is added to the object’s shared object definition.
