Adding / Modifying / Deleting a Wire

You can add, modify, and delete wires on a diagram.

Restrictions and Limitations

  • If a wire, or wire in a multicore, has existing connectivity but the wire ends are not connected to the pins listed on the Connectivity tab: You can place the wire ends on different pins but the existing connectivity will be preserved. Note If you place the wire ends on different pins, the cursor icon changes (), and a tooltip is displayed, to warn you that connectivity will not be made to that pin. The diamond shape around the pin () is preserved, if there is no connectivity between the wire end and the pin position.

The connections are displayed as dimmed under the wire node in the Design Browser.

  • You cannot disconnect a wire from a Highway junction. If you drag a wire end at a Highway junction, the wire and Highway stretch to reposition the joint.

Procedure

Determine the action you want to take:

If you want to... Do the following:
Add a wire Press Space Bar and enter Add Wire. The cursor changes to . Click to place the first end of the wire. Click where you want each section to end, to define sections of the wire. Double-click, or click and then right-click and select Commit, to place the end point of the wire. Note When placing a wire, if you hover over a pin on a device, connector, or splice, a circle is displayed around the pin to indicate that placing the wire will connect to the pin automatically. When you connect a conductor to a pin, the diamond around the pin disappears indicating that the conductor is connected. You can connect more than one wire to each pin. You cannot connect a wire to a net. Tip To limit the wire to only horizontal and vertical sections, use Orthogonal Routing. See Using Orthogonal Routing. If you are using Auto-route Net, you only need to place the start and the end points of the wire and the intermediate sections are created automatically. See Auto-Routing of Nets.
Move a section of a wire Position the cursor over the section of wire. The section of wire is highlighted and the cursor changes to . Click and drag the section of wire. Connected objects move to maintain connectivity. Note If you move the end of a wire to a pin on a device, connector, or splice it will connect to the pin. If you move the end of a wire to a position on a device or connector at which a pin can be placed, but at which no pin currently exists, a pin will be added at that position and the wire will connect automatically.
Resize a section of a wire Position the cursor over an end of the section of wire. The section of wire is highlighted and the cursor changes to . Click and drag the end of the section of wire. Connected objects move to maintain connectivity. Note If you drag the end of a wire to a pin on a device, connector, or splice it will connect automatically.
Disconnect a wire Hover the cursor close to the end of the wire to disconnect. The cursor changes to . Click and drag the wire or end of the wire. The cursor changes to . Drop the wire onto the required location. (Optional) Use the Move End action to disconnect the wire. Note If you place the end on a pin on a device, connector, or splice, it will connect automatically. If you place the end on another wire, a splice is created automatically. If you disconnect the wire from the splice, the splice is preserved.
Delete a section of a wire Either: Select the section of wire on the diagram: Press Space Bar and enter Delete, and then select Home > Delete from the Search Ribbon dropdown list. Right-click the wire in the Design Browser and select Delete. Right-click the section of wire on the diagram and select Delete. Note If you delete a section of wire that is not one of the ends of the wire, the wire becomes a design-wide object. See Design-Wide Objects.
