Bundle Calculation Definitions
The bundle size calculation process uses various methods to determine bundle diameter. The following definitions are used by the methods.
Note
If a bundle is covered by an overbraid, the thickness of the overbraid x 2 is added to the result of the bundle diameter calculation method.
In the following examples, each wire has a diameter of 5.2 and an overbraid wire thickness of 1.1.
The calculated bundle diameter = 11.18.
The calculated bundle and overbraid diameter = 13.38.

Navy Table Calculation
The average inner wire diameter is calculated and multiplied by a factor linked to the number of inner wires from the American Navy Table to give the bundle diameter.
The American Navy Table is a set of predefined multiplication factors, derived from many years of use within the ship building industry, where the inner cores differ only slightly in size. Bundles have been measured many times and this method has been proven to give reliable results in this type of scenario.
Bundle Un-Factored CSA Calculation
Uses the summed CSA of all the inner cores in the calculation, to give the bundle diameter.
Bundle Factored CSA Calculation
Uses the summed CSA of all the inner cores, multiplied by the Bundle CSA Multiplication Factor (as defined in Capital Harness Designer > Harness Engineering Project Preference, the default is 1.3) as in the following calculation, to give the bundle diameter.
If the multiplication factor is applied, one of the following warnings is given in the Design Logs:
Branch: xx to yy will use user defined C.S.A. multiplication factor
Node: zz will use user defined C.S.A. multiplication factor
Combined Outside Diameter
The two largest wire outside diameters are combined.
