Splice Balancing

Splice balancing is performed automatically by the system as part of Harness Engineering or by using the Automate > Splices > Balance / Balance (Force Entry) ribbon actions. The system follows the steps described in the procedure below.

Restrictions and Limitations

  • Splice balancing only effects wires terminating in splice cavities L, R or X. Wires terminating in splice cavities with other names, such as "CS", do not participate in splice balancing. The splice cavity names L and R are arbitrary, and not related to the orientation of the splice on the diagram.

  • The splice attribute Balanceable can be used to control whether a splice participates in automatic splice balancing.

Prerequisites

  • Balanceable splices exist in the design, with wires in the L, R or X cavities.

Procedure

  1. Identify the reference splice.

                 This is the first splice to be examined and balanced, from which the entry
                     direction on all other splices in the design will be derived. The system
                     chooses the first splice to be created in the design as the reference
                     splice. This is not necessarily the first splice in the design browser
                     list.
    
  2. Identify the first wire at the splice (by name, sorted alphanumerically), and assign it to splice cavity L.

  3. Identify those wires that share the same direction of entry as the first wire, and assign them to cavity L.

  4. Assign the other wires at the splice to cavity R.

  5. Move to the next splice.

  6. Identify the first wire at the splice (by name, sorted alphanumerically), and determine the direction of entry as though the splice was in the same location as the reference splice.


    If the direction of entry matches the first wire on the reference splice, assign to cavity L.

    If the direction of entry is opposite to that of the first wire on the reference splice, assign to cavity R.

  7. Identify those wires that share the same direction of entry as the first wire, and assign them to the same cavity.

  8. Assign the other wires at the splice to the opposite cavity.

  9. Repeat from Step 5 until all the balanceable splices in the design are balanced.

Results

  • All balanceable splices in the design are now balanced.

  • If connectivity is changed in such a way as to effect the balancing of the reference splice, then this may also impact the balancing of the other splices in the design, resulting in wires being assigned to different splice cavities.
