Controlling the Layering Order (Z-Order) of Graphical

Shapes and Objects

This topic details how to control the layering order (z-order) of overlapping graphical shapes and objects (graphics, glyphs and symbols). The following actions are available:

  • Bring To Front Brings the selected shapes to the front of the overlapping shapes.

  • Send To Back Sends the selected shapes to the back of the overlapping shapes.

  • Bring Forward Brings the selected shapes one layer forward in the overlapping shapes.

  • Send Backward Sends the selected shapes one layer backward in the overlapping shapes. Caution Z-order settings for an object are lost if styling is applied to it, either manually or automatically. If using z-order settings with signals and symbols, ensure that you apply the z-order to the symbol (for example, Bring To Front) and not to the signal.

Prerequisites

  • The graphical shapes must have been added to the diagram.

Procedure

In the diagram window, select one or more graphical shapes and either:

  • right-click on a selected object and select Order > Bring To Front / Send To Back / Bring Forward / Send Backward

  • press Space Bar and enter Bring To Front, Sent To Back, Bring Forward, or Send Backward

Results

The selected shapes and objects change layer accordingly.
