Creating ICDs From
Capital Logic Designer
This functionality enables you to operate a common System and ICD design environment, where you can design ICDs, including pin and device properties, interfacing signals and device connectors from within Capital Logic Designer, and transfer them seamlessly to Capital Device Modeler. The name of the ICD is derived from the name of the device.
In addition, you can use properties to modify the name and the applicability of the ICD, for applicability this includes released ICDs to support reuse.
The functionality also supports the automatic creation of library parts, as well as controlling part status when creating ICDs from Capital Logic Designer. The functionality is switched on and off by a project preference.

The “Create/Update ICD(s) from Design/Build List” action will work with designs of all release levels. The ICD in Capital Device Modeler inherits its release level from the source Capital Logic Designer design provided that the release level is available at system level, regardless of whether it is creating a new, or updating an existing, ICD.
If you create an ICD from a design that has a domain assigned, the domain information is propagated back to Capital Device Modeler. However, if a device in the design contains a part with a domain that is restricted to you, the ICD creation will fail and an explanatory error message is displayed.
You also have the option to automate the publication of ICDs from Capital Logic Designer into Capital Device Modeler using a webservice or a scheduled task. See also Background ICD Publication From Capital Logic Designer.
Prerequisites
Select one of the ICD creation from Logic designs and build lists project preferences.
If automatic library part creation is required, select the Automatically create part number on ICD creation project preference.
Procedure
Create the device and add the required pins, device properties, interfacing signals and device connectors to it. See Adding a Device Without a Library Part or Symbol and Adding Pins to a Non-Shared Object.
Add any of the following for the newly created device. These could include:Pin attributes/properties
Device attributes/properties
Device footprint and signals
Right-click the device, or its pins in the Diagram window, and select Properties. The Edit Properties dialog box is displayed.
Click the General tab and edit the required properties or attributes.
Click OK to exit the Edit Properties dialog box for the device or pins.
You can right-click the design or build list and selecting Edit to add project, build list, or design applicability to the project or individual designs.Tip If multiple applicabilities are required, these can be comma separated.
Select the Design or Build List, right-click and choose Create/Update ICD(s) from Design/Build List.
If required, configure the ICD name:Set a property with name "ICD_Prefix" on the project. (The property name is case insensitive). Set the value of "ICD_Prefix" property as "%project%
%design% %diagram% %device%"- : This can be any symbol including:- underscore(_), slash(/), comma(,), and so on.
- Key names such as - project, design, diagram, device must be specified between "%%".
- Key names can be in any order and they are case insensitive.
For examples:- Consider a project "test" containing a design "Design1" and diagram "Diagram1" with a device "Dev1":Adding the property "ICD_Prefix" on the project "test" with the values "%project%%design%%diagram%%device%" will yield an ICD with name "test_Design1_Diagram1_DEV1". Adding the property "icd_PREFIX" on project "test" with the values "%Project%%desIGn%::%Device%+%DiaGraM%" will yield an ICD with name "test_Design1::DEV1+Diagram1".
Results
The Capital Logic Designer created ICD is propagated to Capital Device Modeler.
When an ICD is created from a Capital Logic Designer design, its applicability is determined from a combination of the project and design properties.
You can specify ICD applicability using the following properties on project or design:
Applicable Designs
Applicable Build Lists
Applicable Projects
The system considers the values of these three properties on the project or design and determines the applicability of the ICD as a union of them all. Property values should be ";" separated for specifying multiple applicable projects, designs or build lists.
For example:
On Project:
Applicable Projects = Project1;Project2 Applicable Designs = Design1; Applicable Build lists = Buildlist1
On a Design from which the ICD should be created:
Applicable Projects --> Project2;Project6 Applicable Designs --> Design1;Design3
When the ICD is created or updated, the applicability of the ICD would be set as:
Pin properties and attributes, footprint and signals details can all be created and managed in Capital Logic Designer and propagated to the ICD in Capital Device Modeler in an automated way.
If the automatic creation of library parts functionality has been enabled then any new parts defined during the creation of the ICD are shown in Capital Device Modeler. Their system generated unique part numbers follow the convention of ICD name, design revision, unique identification number and are appended with ”$autogen$.” For example a system generated unique airbag part could display as “Airbag_1_-1738963760_$autoGen$:1
Although parts can also be viewed and edited in the Capital Device Modeler Component Library subject to your user permission settings for ICD - Edit Devices, Siemens recommends that all parts editing is done in Capital Logic Designer as the single driving point to control and propagate ICD and Part information in one location.
Tip
Change management of ICDs is also supported. Overwrite an existing ICD by setting its release level to Obsolete in Capital Device Modeler, creating a new revision in Capital Logic Designer, and then publishing the new version.
