Interface Control Documents > Updating ICDs
Updating Devices and Mapping
Pins
If you modify an Interface Control Document (ICD) in Capital Device Modeler, you can map the incoming pins to the existing pins in Capital Logic Designer when you invoke the Update From ICD action.
The system identifies the modifications to the ICD, or the details on a library part that is associated with an ICD, and displays the mapping in the Map Pins Dialog Box. You can apply suggested mapping, if available, or manually Associate and Disassociate the connectivity between the pins.
See Updating ICD Rules.
Restrictions and Limitations
Updating ICDs at design and build list level is not supported.
You can update a shared device when the pins are added or renamed on an ICD. You cannot update a shared device if the number of pins on a Logic device is more than the number of pins on the associated ICD.
Note
If you are running 'Update From ICD' on devices and expect new wires to be created or existing wires to be reused, rather than creating new nets, it is recommended to use a design abstraction with the 'Auto-generate harness connectors' mode turned on. See Adding Wires and Nets Using Auto-Generate Harness Connectors Mode.
Procedure
Determine the action you want to take:
| If you want to... | Do the following: |
|---|---|
| Update a device after a pin name is modified. | Right-click the device and select Update From ICD. The Map Pins dialog box is displayed, and the modified pin name is identified in the Changes field. Click OK, to update the pin name on the diagram. Note The connectivity is removed if you save the library part in Component Library but do not update the ICD in Capital Device Modeler. |
| Update a device after a pin is added. | Right-click the device and select Update From ICD. The Update tab in the Output Window reports that a pin is available but has not been associated to a pin on the diagram. Right-click the device and select Add Pin, to place the pin on the device. Note If you place a pin, any associated connectivity is applied on the diagram automatically. |
| Update a device after a pin is deleted. | Right-click the device and select Update From ICD. The Map Pins dialog box is displayed, and the deleted pin name is identified in the Changes field. Click OK, to remove the pin on the diagram. |
| Update a device after a library part number is specified. | Right-click the device and select Update From ICD. Depending on the differences between the details defined for the library part and the device on the diagram, the Map Pins dialog box is displayed, or the changes are reported on the Update tab. |
| Batch update devices. | Select the devices on the diagram to update, and then right-click and select Update From ICD. An Error message on the Update tab reports the differences between the ICDs and the corresponding devices. To resolve the error: Modify the device or ICD pin names and repeat the Update From ICD action. Select the devices individually, and then right-click and select Update From ICD, to open the Map Pins dialog box and associate the connectivity. |
| Batch update devices after a connectivity change. | From the Project Browser, right-click the design and select Update Devices from ICDs. The “Update devices from ICDs and save changes” Warning message is displayed. Click Continue & Save. The connectivity is applied or renamed between all the associated pins. See also Batch Updating ICDs. |
| Update a shared device. | Right-click an instance of the shared device, and select Update From ICD. The Map Pins dialog box is displayed, and the modifications are identified in the Changes field. Click OK, to update all the instances of the shared device. The update is applied to all the instances of the shared device on the diagram and across the designs. Note If all the pins are not added to the instance of the device, the modifications might not be displayed on the diagram; however, the changes will be available on the properties of the shared device. |
| Update a device managed by a variant ICD. | Right-click the device and select Update From ICD. Depending on the differences between the modifications in the variant ICD and the device on the diagram, the Map Pins dialog box is displayed, or the changes are reported on the Update tab. Note Modifications to any of the variant ICDs are propagated to the device on the diagram. |
| Update a device to add conductors defined in the ICD. |
Results
When you update devices, the results depend on the combination of the following factors:
Details specified in the ICD.
Current design content on the diagram.
Methodology applied by the system to complete the update. See Updating ICD Rules, for examples of how modifications and connectivity are propagated into Capital Logic Designer.
