Moving Pins

You can move pins placed on a device, plug, jack, inline, or block to different positions on the object and swap the positions of pins on the object. If a design‑wide object or shared object has multiple instances on the same diagram, you can move pins from one instance to another.

Note

You cannot move pins from an instance of an object to instances of the object on other diagrams. Instead, first delete the pin from the instance it is currently on then place it on the other instance.

If a device pin on a parameterized device and a connector pin are mated, they move together - moving the pin does not change its mating. If you do not want the two pins to move together, you must disconnect them before moving one. If conductors are connected to the pin being moved, the ends of the conductors will move with the pin.

Tip

You can move a plug that is mated to a device, and all the mated pins, using the Move Connector action. See Moving Mated Plugs.

Procedure

  1. To move pins:Click and drag the pin.

Right-click the pin and select Move Pin(s).

Select the pin, press the space bar and enter Move Pin(s).

Figure 66: Diagram Highlighting When Moving a Pin Tip You can move multiple pins at a time if they are on the same side of the object. Select the pins to move, and then right‑click one of the pins and select Move Pin(s) or press the space bar and enter Move Pin(s). You can control the spacing and order of the pins using modifier keys displayed in a tooltip when placing the pins.

The cursor changes to and a red square () indicates the current target grid point. A red circle indicates the current position of the pin, green circles indicate positions on the object where you can place the pin and dotted gray lines/boxes indicate locations outside the object where you can place the pin. If you hover over another instance of the object, the green circles and dotted gray lines/boxes are shown for that instance instead. If the pin you are moving is mated to another pin, the current position of the mated pin is indicated by a large red circle.

  1. Hover over the location to move the pin to.The cursor changes to if the location is currently unoccupied or to if there is already a pin in that location. If the pin you are moving is mated to another pin and you are placing the pin within the existing boundaries of an object instance, the position the mated pin will be placed in is indicated by a large blue circle. Note If you move the pin to a location that is already occupied by another pin, the two pins will swap positions.

  2. If you clicked and dragged the pin, release the mouse button to place the pin, otherwise click to place the pin.

Results

  • The pin moves to the new position. Any mated pin or connected conductors also move.

  • If you are swapping a pin with another pin, the other pin moves to the position originally occupied by the pin that you moved. Any mated pins or connected conductors also move.

  • If you moved the pin to a position outside the boundaries of the object, the object stretches to include the pin.

Examples

In Figure 67, PIN1 on device DEV1 is moved to a position on another instance of DEV1. The mated pin (PIN1 on plug P1) also moves, and a new instance of P1 is created.

When you move multiple pins together, you can redistribute them, increasing/decreasing gaps and reordering, as required. See Figure 68.
