Creating Variant Positions
for Components
You can define variances in the position of components.
This is achieved by assigning functional variant codes and corresponding variant lengths to node components on a bundle, on the modular parent design using the Node Position Utility Dialog Box.
Modular breakdown assigns the length values according to the set of chosen module codes for the designs to be produced. The example uses functional variant codes but the same steps can be applied for production variant codes.
Prerequisites
Modular parent harness has been created and is ready to run Modular Breakdown.
Functional variant codes have been created, (in the Module Code Dialog Box), and applied to the required designs, (see “Editing the Information for a Design”). In Figure 410, child module design LHD PwrWindows has been assigned Applicable Variant FM Code VFM7. Procedure
On the parent harness diagram, right-click the node of the required component, in this example N216 for CLIP1, and select Node Position Utility from the context menu. The Node Position Utility dialog box displays. In Figure 412, CLIP1 at Node N216 is anchored to node N238, and the associated bundle has a default length of 52. Figure 412: Default Node Position
Click the Add Variant Position button () and click the ellipsis button in the Variant field to open the Variant Expression Editor Dialog Box.
Select the Functional Variant Code radio button in the Expression Type panel, and then select the required functional variant module code from the list in the Expression Builder panel. Click OK.
Enter the required length value in the Dimension field. To add further variant details, click the Add Variant Position button () again and repeat steps 2 and 3. Click OK.
In Figure 413, two variant expressions, VFM7 and VFM8, with variant lengths of 100.0 and 150.0, have been defined for the node position.Figure 413: Set Node Position Variance
Run Harness Processing > Modular Breakdown. This will apply the specified variant lengths to appropriate child designs.
Results
- Modular Breakdown calculates the bundle lengths and variable positions of CLIP1 using variant expressions:
In Figure 414, CLIP1 is positioned at 100.0 units from the anchor node of N238 on design LHD PwrWindows, which has been assigned Applicable Variant FM Code VFM7.

In Figure 415, CLIP1 is positioned at 150.0 units from the anchor node of N238 on design RHD PwrWindows, which has been assigned Applicable Variant FM Code VFM8.
