Promoting a Device or Connector

You can promote a non-shared device, plug, jack, inline, or ring terminal, to be a new shared object or an instance of an existing shared object.

Prerequisites

• The non-shared device or connector to promote has already been added to the design. See Devices, Adding a Plug, Jack, Inline, or Ring Terminal Manually, Adding a Modular Connector or Generating Harness Connectors.

Procedure

1. For devices, plugs, jacks, and ring terminals:Select the object to promote, press the space bar and enter Share.

Right-click the object to promote and select Share.

For inlines: Select both the plug and the jack of the inline to promote, and then press the space bar and enter Share, or right‑click the inline and select Share.

The Share Dialog Box [Devices, Connectors and Splices] is displayed.

2. Unless you are promoting a modular connector, on the Shared Device tab, Shared Plug tab, Shared Receptacle tab, Shared Inline tab, or Shared Ring Terminal tab, choose one of the following actions:Create New Select to create a new shared object. Specify a name (or, for an inline, specify a receptacle (jack) name and a plug name) and revision for the object. If the existing name was generated using Advanced Naming Functionality and you want it to continue to be treated as a generated name, select Generated.

Share Into Select to make the object being promoted an instance of an existing shared object. Select the existing shared object in the list. Note Share Into is not available when sharing a modular connector. If a shared device that has a device connector has an instance placed on another design that is currently open you cannot share into it. If you hover over the shared object in the Share Into list a tooltip displays which design the instance is placed on. Close the design and try again. Objects with library part associations can only be shared into shared objects that have the same library part associated.

3. On the Associate Pins tab associate pins on the object that is being promoted with pins in the shared object definition:If you are creating a new shared object the Shared Object list is automatically populated with pins and associations with pins in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list are created automatically. You can edit the associations if required.

If you are sharing the object being promoted into an existing shared object, you must create associations between the pins in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list and the Shared Object list. Select a pin in the Selected Instance or Symbol list, and then in the Shared Object list, select the pin to associate it with and click Associate. Alternatively, click Associate All to automatically associate each of the pins in Selected Instance list or Symbol list with a pin in the Shared Object list. When you Associate All, if there are pins in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list that do not have pins in the Shared Object list that they can be associated with, a warning is displayed explaining that new pins will be created. Click OK to create new pins, or click Cancel.

Note All the pins in the Selected Instance list or Symbol list must be associated with a pin in the Shared Object list, otherwise the OK button will be unavailable and you cannot continue with the object promotion.

Tip To remove an association between two pins, select the two pins and click Disassociate. To remove all associations click Disassociate All. To add a new pin to the Shared Object list, click New. The Add Shared Pins Dialog Box is displayed. To delete or rename a pin in the Shared Object list, select it and click Delete or Rename.

4. Optionally, you can use the Pin Reservations tab to set one or more of the pins to be unrestricted. Pins with reservation status Automatic or Reserved are listed in the Automatic Reservations list. Select a pin and click Add to move it to the Unrestricted Pins list. To make all the pins unrestricted, click Add All. See “Pin Reservation Status” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide for automatic, reserved, and unrestricted pins.Note When sharing an object into an existing shared object, if the existing shared object has an instance placed on another design that is not currently open, unrestricting automatic pins placed in the other design during the Share Into action is not permitted. Open the other design and try again, or perform the action in Capital Project Manager.

5. Click OK.

Results

• The object is promoted and becomes an instance of a shared object.

• If you selected Create New a new shared object is created and is added to the Shared Objects Browser.

• If you shared the object into an existing shared object, properties and attributes on the objects are merged: For Analysis-related attributes (such as Analysis Model) and for the Assembly attribute, the value on the existing shared object is retained and the value on the object being promoted is discarded. See also “Attaching Component Models” in the Capital Analysis User Guide.

For other attributes and for properties: If the object being promoted or the existing shared object has properties or attributes that the other object does not have, they are retained on the shared object.

If the object being promoted has property or attribute values that conflict with values on the existing shared object, the Resolve Conflicting Attributes and Properties Dialog Box displays and the values selected in that dialog box are retained and the other values are discarded.

In the Output Window, the Resolution tab is displayed. The table in the Resolution tab lists any property or attribute values in the object being promoted that were in conflict with those in the existing shared object, and shows how those conflicts were resolved. Properties/attributes that may require adjustment (such as when the value of the Analysis Model attribute was changed) are indicated by the value of the Type field being “Warning”.

• If you shared a device based on a symbol into an existing shared object the symbol is added to the shared object’s shared object definition.
