Generating Production
Technical Variations
When you are happy with any simulation results and have added all required candidate objects to Parent PM Codes, you can run the full live generation of production module variants process. This action generates production technical variant codes for the given set of production module codes.
For clarity, this example illustrates the process using just one PM input set, VC_M_C-14, as in Figure 447. In reality you can run the process on multiple codes simultaneously.

This example generates variants based on Module Codes. You can use an alternative generation method using derivatives. See also “Variant Generation by Derivative”.
Restrictions and Limitations
- You cannot generate Production Technical Variant codes on Nested Production Module Codes. You must generate variants from the top-level parent PM code to ensure that all the PM codes in the folder tree are considered when calculating the variants.
Procedure
Select the required Production Module Code in the PM Codes tab, and then select the Generate Production Technical Variations action from the Automate > Modules ribbon. Alternatively, right-click the module folder in the browser and select Modular > Generate Production Technical Variations.The Generate / Simulate Production Technical Variations Dialog Box displays as in Figure 448. The dialog box displays the codes selected for variant generation. The Status column indicates if variant generation is possible or not. Figure 448: Generate Variations
You can optionally edit the Combination Name and PM Tech Code Prefix fields to an entry of your choice.
Select the Module Code radio button.
Select Generate Production Technical Variations for PM codes.For information on options to generate production technical variations for single functions, see Generating Production Technical Variations for Single Functions.
If any of the selected PM codes are nested production modules, optionally select Generate nested variant codes to generate technical variations for each level of the nested production module. See Generate / Simulate Production Technical Variations Dialog Box.
Click OK.
Results
The generation process assigns all components in the input set to the corresponding technical codes as in Figure 449. In this example, the folder for VC_M_C-14 now contains two Technical Variant Production Modules, VPM-VC_M_C-14-01 and VPM-VC_M_C-14-02. Figure 449: PM Code Browser
The generation process automatically copies all the FM codes to the PM code space.
The generation process then uses these codes on all the wires associated to the input objects, to generate all corresponding combinations in PM space. See Figure 450. Technical codes are created using the following convention PMPrefix+PMCODE+n. In this example, where the Combination Name is VC_M_C-14, and the PM Tech Code Prefix is VPM, technical codes are created as follows, VPM-VC_M_C-14-01, VPM-VC_M_C-14-02, and so on. The Technical Variations tab opens in the console. It displays the number of variants, and their content, created by the process. See Figure 451 Figure 451: Generation Results
A project preference Max Number of combinations before failure controls the maximum number of technical variations to be created per combination. If this maximum is exceeded, the generation process is aborted, and a message displays in the Technical Variation tab, see Figure 452.
