Adding Wires and Nets Using Auto-Generate Harness Connectors Mode

You can auto-connect a wire or net to an existing connector, or auto-generate a new connector when you add a wire or net to a device, or reposition existing conductors.

Restrictions and Limitations

• If you add a conductor to a device with a library part number that contains a harness connector footprint, you must use the Generate Harness Connectors action to apply the connector footprint part number to the auto-generated connectors. See also Generating Harness Connectors Using a Footprint.

• If a connector has a library part number, you cannot auto‑connect to the connector; a new connector will be auto-generated at the pin position.

Prerequisites

• Select the Auto-Generate icon () on the Status Bar to activate Auto‑Generate Harness Connectors mode.

• A wire or net is chosen to add to the device.

Procedure

1. Hover over the device to place the conductor.A ghost connector graphic and the name of the closest existing connector is displayed. Figure 110: Ghost Connector Graphic

2. Click to place the conductor, and then double‑click the end location.The conductor is connected automatically to the existing connector, and the connector graphic is updated to include the pin position. Note If there is no existing pin on a parameterized device, a new pin is created automatically. For devices with a symbol or part number, and shared devices, you must connect to existing placed pins.

3. To auto-generate a new connector when you add a conductor, press Ctrl when you hover over the device.A ghost “New Connector” graphic and the name format of your connectors (P-1) is displayed. Figure 112: Ghost Connector Graphic and Auto-Generated Connector (P404)

Examples

See the following examples of how the system calculates the position and naming of auto‑connected conductors and auto‑generated connectors when you add a conductor.

Functions	Graphical Results
If there are no connectors on the device, a new connector is auto-generated.
If there is an existing connector on the same side of the device, the conductor is auto-connected to the existing connector.
If the closest connector is on a different side of the device, another instance of the connector graphic is created.
If the closest connector is on a different side of the device but there is another connector on the same side, the conductor is auto‑connected to the connector on the same side of the device.
If there are pins between an existing connector and where you want to add the conductor, another instance of the connector graphic is created.
If you add a conductor between two existing connectors on the same side of the device, the conductor is auto‑connected to the nearest connector.
If you add a conductor equidistant between two connectors, the conductor is auto‑connected to a connector alphanumerically.
