ICD Backshell Support

Within Capital Device Modeler you can associate backshell connections to harness connectors and device side connectors. This procedure describes how Capital Logic Designer supports this implementation. Two possible scenarios exist for backshells:

  1. Where the ICD has no part number and a device side connector.

  2. Where the ICD has a part number and regular footprint.

Prerequisites

  • An ICD with a backshell definition specified for one of the signals to be implemented has been defined in Capital Device Modeler.

  • The functionality is only supported in a wiring design abstraction and this abstraction supports “Automatically Generated Harness Connectors.”

Procedure

  1. Select an ICD from the Unplaced folder and drag it on to the diagram.

  2. A backshell pin is automatically added above the first pin of a vertical harness connector and to the right of a horizontally placed harness connector.

  3. A backshell termination will be added to each instance of a devices harness connector. The following image shows two instances of the device have been added and a backshell termination has been added to both instances.

  4. Design rule checks capture inconsistencies between the Capital Device Modeler definition and the instance as placed on the diagram. These can be manually corrected or you can select Update From ICD from the context menu.

Results

  • Logic backshell terminations and ICD backshell terminations are matched by name. On reusing an existing backshell when running the Update From ICD action - if a harness connector has had a manually added backshell termination whose name matches with the ICD backshell termination of a corresponding device connector, the existing termination will be reused and updated with Capital Device Modeler defined properties.

On renaming a placed ICD backshell termination in Capital Logic Designer - if an ICD driven backshell termination is renamed to a non-ICD defined backshell termination, it will be treated as a manually added termination. When Update From ICD is next run it will create a new termination matching with the ICD backshell termination name.

  • After harness connector generation, one instance of each backshell termination, which is not already present, will be created per device instance. In the examples below, ICD5 has a backshell termination BST2 from its Capital Device Modeler ICD definition, while BST1 is a manually added termination.

Following a “Generate Harness Connector” or “Update From ICD” action, the instance is re‑rendered as shown below:
