Graphical Offsets

On full scale diagrams, you can automatically change the graphical position of reference node components, such as clips, by configuring a graphical offset. You can use this functionality to accurately position components within any defined tolerances.

You can configure the graphical offset on a node by node basis using the Graphical Node Position Utility Dialog Box. Use this dialog box to define a positive or negative Graphical Offset in relation to the physical distance from a defined “Reference” node (which is the start or end node of the bundle).

Figure 331 shows a positive graphical offset of “5” applied to the clip CL-407 node. This has the effect of increasing the distance from its “Reference” node N5395. Dimension lines (see Dimensions) are configured in the figure to indicate the original physical distance (57) and the adjusted graphical distance (62).

You can reference the Graphical Offset attribute when you are building Query Expressions and Fixture Placement and Deletion Constraints.

Graphical offsets that you have configured on a node are maintained if you split the bundle.

If you move a node, the system automatically resets any graphical offsets that are configured on it.

Extensibility

You can also create extensibility plugins to automatically update graphical offsets on multiple nodes. For full details about how to create such plugins, see “Extensibility Plugins” in the Capital Design Tools - Common Functions Guide. If you do use such plugins, you must run the Rules > Update Graphical Node Position action from the Automate ribbon to apply the positional changes to the diagram.

You can run the following Design Rule Checks to ensure any plugins that you use apply the offsets correctly:

  • Reference nodes overlap graphically

When you change the graphical length of a bundle (either by Overriding Graphical Bundle Length or by manually stretching a flex bundle), and Proportional Stretching is enabled (see “Using Proportional Bundle Stretch”), the system automatically proportionately adjusts any graphical offsets configured on nodes.

Default Formula

In most scenarios, the system uses the following formula to re-calculate the graphical offsets:

New Bundle Graphical Length / Old Bundle Graphical Length * Original Position from Reference value

The difference between this result, and the Original Position from Reference is then automatically set by the system as the “Graphical Offset”.

The Original Position from Reference value is displayed on the Graphical Node Position Utility dialog box.

The following sections describe all scenarios and calculation methods used by the system.

Bundle is not Divided into Segments

The system proportionally adjusts the graphical positions using the Default Formula.

Bundle is Divided into Segments

The system only changes one segment. This segment is defined by the Modify First Segment setting configured against the diagram on the Edit Harness Diagram Dialog Box.

  • If Modify First Segment is selected: Nodes on the first segment are moved proportionally by the system using the Default Formula.

IncorrectNodes on other segments are non-proportionally adjusted using the formula: New Bundle Graphical Length - Old Bundle Graphical Length. The result is then automatically set by the system as its “Graphical Offset”.

  • If Modify First Segment is cleared: Only the nodes on the last bundle segment are proportionally adjusted by the system using the Default Formula.

The system does not apply a graphical offset to nodes on any other segment.

  • If you adjust the graphical length of a middle bundle segment, the system applies graphical offsets as follows: For nodes on the adjusted segment, the system calculates a proportional graphical offset using the Default Formula.

For nodes on the segment after the adjusted segment, the system calculates a proportional graphical offset using the following formula. New Bundle Graphical Length - Old Bundle Graphical Length. The result is then automatically set by the system as its “Graphical Offset”.

The system does not apply any graphical offset for nodes that are on segments before the adjusted segment.
