Place Dialog Boxes

To access: Double-click the top node of a device, plug, jack, inline, or ring terminal with pins in the Design Browser. Alternatively, in the Parts Browser double‑click a library part that has a symbol associated with it, or right-click it and select Create Device with pins.

Used to select which pins to place on a new instance of a parameterized design‑wide device, plug, jack, inline, ring terminal, or block that has pins. Used to select which pins to place on a new parameterized device added from the Parts Browser using a library part that has one or more symbols associated with it. Used to select a symbol for a new instance of a design‑wide device that has a one or more symbols associated with it, or for a new device added from the Parts Browser using a library part that has one or more symbols associated with it.

Note

The Place dialog boxes include the Place Device, Place Plug, Place Receptacle, Place Inline, Place Ring Terminal, and Place Block dialog boxes. The field descriptions apply to the Place Device, Place Plug, Place Receptacle, Place Inline, and Place Ring Terminal dialog boxes. Objects

Field	Description
Pin Selection	Displayed only in the Place Device dialog box. Select to create a parameterized object instance (that is, not using a symbol).
Symbol Selection	Displayed only in the Place Device dialog box. Not available when placing an instance of a design-wide device that does not have a symbol associated with it. Select to create the object instance using a symbol.
Place	Click to place the object instance. Unavailable in the Place Device dialog box if Symbol Selection is selected and no symbol is selected. Also unavailable in the Place Device dialog box for a device with an associated library part if Symbol Selection is selected, the pins in the library part definition have already been placed on another instance of the object, the “Disallow pin/port duplication within a design” project preference is selected, and As Reference is cleared.
As Reference	Specifies whether the selected pins will be added as reference pins (selected) or not (cleared). The pins displayed in the Select Pins table may change depending on whether or not As Reference is selected. See “Select Pins” below. See Reference Pins.
Pin selection fields In the Place Device dialog box the pin selection fields are displayed only if Pin Selection is selected.
Select Pins	Lists the pins that can be placed on the object. If the As Reference option is selected or the “Disallow pin/port duplication within a design” project preference is cleared: For objects without library parts associated pins all the pins on the object are listed. For objects with library parts associated pins all the pins in the library part definition are listed. If As Reference is cleared and the “Disallow pin/port duplication within a design” project preference is selected: Unplaced pins and pins that have reference instances but no non-reference instances are listed. For objects with library parts associated pins in the library part definition that are not placed on the object are listed. Note Unplaced pins are created when you: Delete an instance of a shared object or design-wide object that has pins and is not the last remaining instance of the object. See Design-Wide Objects. Delete a stacked pin but retain the individual pins. See Deleting a Stacked Pin. Press Ctrl when deleting a pin. Unplaced pins are shown in the Unplaced Pins folder under the object in the Design Browser. If the “Purge unplaced objects on Save” project preference is selected unplaced pins on non-shared objects are deleted when a design is saved. Modular insert pin names display the blocked cavity and pin numbers separated by a colon “:” to indicate the hierarchy of pins within inserts. See Modular Connectors. Select or multi‑select the pins to place on the object. If you choose to place pins individually on the diagram, they will display in the order selected in this table. If the object has a library part, the pin icons of pins in the library part definition that have not been placed on the object as non-reference pins are unavailable. See also Select Pins Table. Tip If pins are selected in the table but you do not want to place any pins on the object instance, select one pin to deselect all the other pins, and then Ctrl+click the selected pin again.
Symbol View / Connector View	Displayed only for objects that have an associated symbol. Displays a zoom-able view of the associated symbol. If the object has multiple symbols associated, you can select an alternative one from the Symbol dropdown list. Modular connector symbols show the face views of the connector, modular inserts and pins defined in the Capital Component Manager. See Select Pins Table for information on cross-highlighting of pins in the symbol and the table. Read-only.
Place	Unavailable in the Place Device dialog box if Symbol Selection is selected. Unavailable in the Place Inline and Place Ring Terminal dialog boxes. Specifies how to place the pins on the object instance: Individually Manually place the selected pins one-by-one. When placing pins on the diagram, they will display in the order selected in the Select Pins table. Auto-Generate Have the pins placed on the object automatically. Only available in the Place Device dialog box. As Stack Place all the selected pins as a single ‘stacked’ pin. See Stacked Pins. Unavailable if As Reference is selected. Note You cannot add a reference pin to a stack. See Stacked Pins This video demonstrates how to add pins as a stack: As Group Place all the selected pins as a group in one click. The pins are placed as individual pins next to each other. You can control the spacing and order of the pins using modifier keys which are described in a tooltip that is shown when placing the pins. This video demonstrates how to add pins as a group: When indicated by a tooltip you can press the Shift or Ctrl keys to change between placing Individually, As Group, or As Stack when you are placing the pins.
Symbol selection fields Displayed only in the Place Device dialog box when Symbol Selection is selected.
Symbols	Lists the symbols that are associated with the design-wide object. Select the symbol to use for this instance.
Symbol	Displays a zoom-able view of the selected symbol. Read-only.
