Automatic Sharing of ICDs

Automatic sharing enables ICDs to be distributed across multiple systems more efficiently. A common intention for Device Engineers is to use the same physical device across a number of designs.

Automatic sharing of ICDs is available as soon as an ICD is tagged as applicable to a build list or a project, or one or more designs within Capital Device Modeler, and you start to consume it within Capital Logic Designer.

Prerequisites

• The “Do not automatically share ICD on placement” Project Preferences for Capital Device Modeler is cleared.

• ICD Applicability is set to a build list or a project, or to multiple designs.

Procedure

1. From within the Unplaced folder, right-click and select Place Shared Device or double‑click the required ICD.The tool creates a shared device in the background. Its name is derived from its assigned ICD role and all its pins are translated into automatic pins of the shared device. Note Sharing is the default action once an ICD is made applicable to multiple designs, or is applicable across a build list or a project. If required, you can use the Place Pins action to place an independent design‑wide device instance.

2. The entire shared pin list of the ICD is displayed for selection in the Place ICD dialog box. All pins are automatically shared.

3. Select the pins to add to the first design.For example, if you have an ICD applicable to two designs, containing a device with six pins and you select two pins that you place on Design 1; these are automatically reserved. The system assists you by only showing the remaining (four) pins when you want to place them on Design 2. As you do the placement the device on Design 2 is automatically shared into Design 1. The same scenario applies if a second user places the same ICD onto a second design. The system only presents unplaced pins, the other pins having been consumed in Design 1.

4. If you attempt to place a device that is used in a number of revisions of a build list, an error message is displayed to warn that you cannot place the ICD as shared. This is because it would result in multiple shared devices with the same name (as the role of the ICD). You must place the ICD as unshared, using the Place Pins action, and then share it into the appropriate shared device.Note The Place Shared Device action may be unavailable because of user permission rights or domain restrictions. If you require access to this action, contact your system administrator.
