Promoting a Multicore or

Overbraid

You can promote a non-shared multicore or overbraid to be a new shared object or an instance of an existing shared object.

See Shared Objects for a description of shared objects and their purpose.

Note

To add a shield termination to a multicore that has been promoted to be a shared object and that does not have any other multicores in its inner cores you have to first add the shield termination to the shared multicore’s shared object definition in Capital Project Manager. See “Shared Multicore” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide. Alternatively, you can add a shield termination before promoting the object. See Adding a Shield Termination.

Prerequisites

  • The non-shared multicore or overbraid that you want to promote has already been added to the design. See Creating a Multicore or Overbraid.

  • If the non-shared multicore or overbraid that you want to promote was added from Capital Component Manager, at least one of the conductors in the library part (with the exception of the shield termination, if it has one) must have been added to a diagram. See Adding a Multicore From Capital Component Manager and Adding New Component Conductors.

Procedure

  1. To open the Share Dialog Box [Multicores and Overbraids]:Right-click the multicore in the Design Browser

and select Share.

Select one of the indicators of the multicore or overbraid. Press the space bar and enter Share.

Right-click one of the indicators of the multicore or overbraid and select Share.

  1. On the Shared Multicores or Shared Overbraids tab choose one of the following actions:Create New Select to create a new shared object. Specify a name and revision for the object. If the existing name was generated using Advanced Naming Functionality and you want it to continue to be treated as a generated name, select Generated. Click OK. Skip the remaining steps in this procedure.

Share Into Select to make the object being promoted an instance of an existing shared object. Select the existing shared object in the list. Note Objects with library part associations can only be shared into shared objects that have the same library part associated. Additionally, if a multicore or overbraid does not have a library part associated but one of its inner cores does, the multicore or overbraid can only be shared into a multicore or overbraid that has an inner core with the same library part.

  1. Select Exact to list only shared multicores or overbraids with inner core structures that exactly match the inner core structure of the object being promoted or select Subset to also list shared multicores or overbraids which have an inner core structure which could contain the object being promoted as a subset of their top level.

  2. On the Associate Cores tab, if associations have not been created automatically between inner cores in the Source Multicore and Target Multicore trees, you must create them manually. Select an inner core in the Source Multicore tree, select the inner core to associate it within in the Target Multicore tree, and then click Associate.Note All the inner cores in the Source Multicore tree must be associated with an inner core in the Target Multicore tree, otherwise the OK button will be unavailable and you cannot continue with the object promotion.

Tip To remove an association between two inner cores, select the two inner cores and click Disassociate. To remove all associations click Disassociate All.

  1. Click OK.

Results

  • The object is promoted to be a shared object. All the object’s inner cores also become shared objects.

  • If you selected Create New, a new shared object is created and is added to the Shared Objects Browser.

  • If you shared the object into an existing shared object, properties and attributes on the objects are merged: If the object being promoted or the existing shared object has properties or attributes that the other object does not have, they are retained on the shared object.

If the object being promoted has property or attribute values that conflict with values on the existing shared object, or if any of the inner cores of the object being promoted has property or attribute values that conflict with the values on their associated inner core in the existing shared object, the Resolve Conflicting Attributes and Properties Dialog Box displays and the values selected in that dialog box are retained and the other values are discarded.

In the Output Window, the Resolution tab is displayed. The table in the Resolution tab lists any property or attribute values in the object being promoted that were in conflict with those in the existing shared object, and shows how those conflicts were resolved. Properties/attributes that may require adjustment are indicated by the value of the Type field being “Warning”.

  • If you shared a multicore into an existing shared mulitcore with a different indicator type, the indicator type of the multicore being promoted is changed to match that of the exising shared object. For example, if you share a coax shielded multicore into an existing oval shielded shared multicore, the indicator type of the coax shielded multicore is changed to oval.
