Applying Routing Rules

and Preferences

You can add routing rules to individual cables to restrict routes or force cables through specific nodes, segments, or zones. You can select the Preferences options to override or ignore certain rules to temporarily test complex routing on the network.

The added rules are used as the default criteria when you run Automatic routing. You can then choose the preferences to relax specific rules to override restricted segments and compare alternative routes for the cable.

Restrictions and Limitations

• A cable route calculated with preferences selected cannot be accepted. However, the identified route can enable you to determine modifications, such as increased capacity (wider trays, larger penetrations) or multiple segregations.

Caution

Take care when overriding or ignoring specified rules, as changes can impact the cable routing.

• If you modify rules, such as change priority or direction while simultaneously changing the Enabled status, the modifications will be lost. You must ensure that modifications to rules and changes to the Enabled status are saved in separate actions.

• If you select another cable without saving, your changes will be lost. Siemens recommends that you save your changes regularly.

Prerequisites

• Select a project in the Project dropdown list.

• Define the routing rules and preferences for the project in Capital Cable Router Admin.

• Click the Rules and Preferences icon () to display the Define Rules and Preferences Dialog Box.

Procedure

Determine the action you want to take:

If you want to…	Do the following…
Add or remove a routing rule.	Select a cable from the table of cables in the project. Click the Rules tab, and then click the Add Rule icon (). An active Required Node rule is added to the bottom of the table by default. Click the Required Node dropdown list and choose the rule to apply to the selected cable. See “Routing Rules Overview” for a description of the available rules. Specify the columns as required to configure the rule. Tip The ID entries are automatically converted to uppercase and will only return nodes and segments of the same case. Continue to add rules or click the Remove Rule icon () to delete rules from the table. Click Save to validate all rules and save your changes.
Prioritize a routing rule.	Enter a number in the Priority field or click the dropdown list and select a number to determine the order the rule is invoked when Automatic routing is run. Lower numbers are calculated first. You can also click the Prioritize icon () to set the priority based on the Auto-Route X,Y,Z coordinates to all applicable rules.
Validate the values specified on a routing rule.	Select a rule and click the Validate icon (). If validated, the rule is confirmed. If not validated, a message displays the reason for the failure and the rule is highlighted in the table. You can hover over the rule to see the reason for the failure at any time.
Specify routing preferences to relax the rules applied to a cable. See also Usage Example – Using Preferences to Guide Cable Routing.	Select a cable and click the Preferences tab. Specify values in the following fields: Fill Threshold Route Comparison Threshold See also Embellishing the Nodal Network. Select the required preference options. Click Save, or Reset to restore the defaults inherited from the project.
