Creating the Optimized Complexity Harness Levels for a Harness
You can create (generate) the optimized complexity harness levels for a harness. The purpose of an optimized level is that you can manufacture it cost-effectively. This flow includes specifying which options and variants you want to be giveaway.
Note
The optimized complexity calculation applies any metric elements that apply costs based on harness, wire, connector, slot, splice, and harness level (for example, penalizing low-volume harness levels as part of a complexity management cost).
Prerequisites
Take Rates must have been specified for the Models and options/Packages in the harness. See Editing the Take Rates for Vehicle Models.
You must have created the metrics that you want to use for costing the harnesses. See Metric.
Procedure
With a Capital Systems Integrator diagram open, press Space Bar and enter Harness Level optimization, or right-click a harness in the Design Browser (Design Tab) and choose Optimize Harness; the Harness Level Optimization Dialog Box displays.
Use the Metrics drop-down drop-down list to select the type of metrics that you want to apply to the harnesses.
Select the harness in the Harness table and click the Define giveaway () button; the Define Giveaway: Dialog Box displays. The Full Complexity section displays the number of harness levels and annual cost for the full complexity harness levels for the harness.
Specify whether you want to use the MANUAL or AUTOMATIC method of specifying giveaway options and variants.
Follow the appropriate steps below. If you are using...
Do the following:
MANUAL method
You have the option to specify the Level Limit (that is, the upper limit of harness levels that the harness can have).
In the Giveaway table, specify whether you want each option and variant to be given away Always, Never, or Sometimes (in the case of Sometimes, specify the option expression that represents the conditions under which you can give away the option).
Note If you right-click the Always or Never column, you can choose to Select All, Deselect All, Select All Options, or Deselect All Options.
AUTOMATIC method
You must specify the Level Limit (that is, the upper limit of harness levels that the harness can have).
For options and variants that cannot be given away, select Don’t in the Giveway table. Note If you right-click the Don’t column, you can choose to Select All, Deselect All, Select All Options, or Deselect All Options.
For options and variants that you can give away under certain conditions, specify the option expression representing those conditions in the Only when column.
Note When you select an option or variant in the table, the Connectors table and Signals table show the connectors and signals associated with it.
- In the Optimized Complexity section of the dialog box, click Recalculate Optimized Complexity results (). If you are using...
The following happens:
MANUAL method
The Optimized Complexity section updates to show the number of harness levels and annual cost for the optimized complexity based on your giveaway options.
AUTOMATIC method
The system calculates which options and variants to give away in order to have the optimal harness complexity within your restrictions and displays the Levels and Cost for that solution.
Note You can compare the Optimized Complexity figures with those in the Full Complexity section. If the system cannot calculate an optimized complexity solution within your Levels Limit restriction, a warning triangle displays next to that field.
Edit the giveaway options and variants, and click Recalculate Optimized Complexity results () until you are satisfied with the number of optimized complexity harness levels and cost.
Click OK; you return to the Harness Level Optimization dialog box.
Results
In the Harness table:
The Optimized Complexity Levels column displays how many harness levels this harness has with the specified giveaway taken into account.
The Optimized Complexity
column displays the cost of the harness based on the metric selected in the Metrics drop-down with the specified giveaway taken into account.
