Overview of Overbraids

An overbraid is a sheath that is applied to the outside of a group of conductors, primarily to address electrical noise concerns.

On a diagram the graphical representation of an overbraid is similar to that of a multicore, but an overbraid is not the same as a multicore. An overbraid can be applied over a multicore or other overbraid whereas a multicore can be applied over another multicore but cannnot be applied over an overbraid.

You can share overbraids so that they can be added to multiple designs within a project. See Shared Multicores and Overbraids. You can assign a library part to an overbraid that already exists in a design. In Capital Component Manager, overbraids are represented as wires. When you assign a library wire to an overbraid, the color, material, and wire spec attributes are applied to the overbraid.

Note

You cannot add shared conductors to a non-shared overbraid.

The presence of an overbraid is represented on a diagrams by indicators attached to the overbraid’s inner cores (conductors). Figure 117 shows the appearance of the overbraid indicator included in the Default style set. You can edit the appearance of indicators and you can add custom indicators to a style set. See “Multicore Indicators” and “Adding a Custom Multicore Indicator Type to the defaultStylesxml File” in the Capital Diagram Styling User Guide.

By default indicators span the space between the conductors in the overbraid. If the conductors in the overbraid are too far apart, the indicators will be split when you create the overbraid. You can use the Toggle Indicators action to change whether or not indicators are split. See Toggling Multicore and Overbraid Indicators. Overbraid indicators have “hookups” that you can attach a shield termination to. See Adding a Shield Termination.

In the Design Browser the indicators and the inner cores are shown as child nodes of the overbraid node, as in Figure 118. See Icons in Browsers for further information about Design Browser icons.

You can display the name of an overbraid next to its indicators on the diagram:

1. To display the Properties Dialog Box. Right‑click an indicator on the diagram and select Properties to display the overbraid name next to a single indicator.

Right‑click the overbraid indicators node in the Design Browser and select Properties to display the overbraid name next to all the indicators on the overbraid.

2. On the General tab, select the Visible check box next to the Name field.
