Splices > Splice Balancing
Splice Balancing Routine - Usage Example
When automatic splice balancing is invoked as part of Harness Engineering or by using the Automate > Splices > Balance / Balance (Force Entry) ribbon actions, the system follows the procedure described in Splice Balancing.
Example Design
The example design has three connectors connected by three bundles, with three splices. There are no splice-to-splice connections. Initially all the wires at splices are in cavity X.

Splice Balancing Routine
Step 1: Identify the reference splice
In the example, the reference splice is SP1.
Step 2: Identify the first wire at the splice and assign it to splice cavity L.
The wires connected to the reference splice are examined in alphanumeric order. The first wire is taken as the starting point.
The first wire at the reference splice SP1 is WIRE11, and this wire is assigned to splice cavity L.
Step 3: Identify those wires that share the same direction of entry as the first wire, and assign them to cavity L
WIRE3 and WIRE14 both go in the same direction as WIRE11, so these are also assigned to splice cavity L.
Figure 168: Routes of WIRE3, WIRE11 and WIRE14
Step 4: Assign the other wires at the splice to cavity R.
Wires WIRE12 and WIRE13 do not share the same entry direction, and so they are assigned to cavity R.
Splice SP1 is now balanced.
Figure 169: Splice SP1 is Balanced
Step 9: Repeat from Step 5 until all the balanceable splices in the design are balanced.
Step 5: Move to the next splice
The next splice to be examined is SP3.
Step 6: Identify the first wire at the splice, and determine the direction of entry as though the splice was in the same location as the reference splice.
The first wire at SP3 is WIRE1, which goes to connector C3. Two wires on the opposite side of the splice (WIRE4 and WIRE8) go to connector C2.
Figure 170: Route of Wire WIRE1
The reference splice is used to establish the entry direction of the wires into this splice.
The system processes splice SP3 as if it was in the same location as reference splice SP1.
Figure 171: Route of WIRE1 if Splice SP3 was in the Same Location as Reference Splice SP1
If SP3 was at the same location as reference splice SP1, WIRE1 would run in the opposite direction to WIRE11, which is assigned to the cavity L of reference splice SP1. As WIRE1 enters on the opposite side, it is therefore assigned to cavity R of SP3.
Step 7: Identify those wires that share the same direction of entry as the first wire, and assign them to the same cavity
There are no wires which share the entry direction of WIRE1.
Step 8: Assign the other wires at the splice to the opposite cavity
WIRE4 and WIRE8 will both be assigned to cavity L of splice SP3.
Splice SP3 is now balanced.
Figure 172: Splice SP3 is Balanced
Step 9: Repeat from Step 5 until all the balanceable splices in the design are balanced.
Step 5: Move to the next splice
The next splice to be examined is SP2.
Step 6: Identify the first wire at the splice (by name, sorted alphanumerically), and determine the direction of entry as though the splice was in the same location as the reference splice.
The first wire at SP2 is WIRE10.
Figure 173: Route of WIRE10
If splice SP2 was in the same location as the reference splice SP1, then WIRE10 would enter the splice from the same direction as WIRE11. WIRE11 is assigned to cavity L on reference splice SP1, therefore WIRE1 is assigned to cavity L on splice SP2.
Figure 174: Route of WIRE10 if Splice SP2 was in the Same Location as Reference Splice SP1
Step 7: Identify those wires that share the same direction of entry as the first wire, and assign them to the same cavity
There are no wires which share the entry direction of WIRE1.
Step 8: Assign the other wires at the splice to the opposite cavity
WIRE6 and WIRE9 both enter SP2 from the opposite direction to WIRE10, and are therefore assigned to cavity R.
Step 9: Go to Step 5 until all the balanceable splices in the design are balanced.
All the splices are now balanced.
