Constraining

the Placement of Bundle Devices on Bundles

You can use a “Place bundle device by Attribute/Property” constraint to control how the association process places bundle devices on bundles.

Note

You can bundle constraints into rules that you can set on objects. See Rules and Constraints to create rules.

Rules and constraints adhere to hierarchies. That means, if they are set on an object, child objects inherit them. For example, you can set constraints for a diagram so that they are inherited by all objects in the design (in this case, all bundles). See Setting Constraints for an Entire Topology Diagram.

There are two ways of placing bundle devices. The following video demonstrates:

• How to place bundle devices using a constraint.

• How to place bundle devices manually.

Procedure

1. Select a bundle to place bundle devices.Press the space bar and enter Properties.

Right-click the bundle and select Properties.

Double-click the bundle.

The Edit Properties dialog box for the bundle is displayed.

2. Click the Rules tab and click the Add Constraint button.The Constraint Selection dialog box is displayed.

3. Select Place bundle device by Attribute/Property and click OK.The system adds the constraint to the Edit Properties dialog box.

4. Edit the constraint as required and click OK.

Results

The system applies the constraint whenever the association process or wiring synchronization process runs.

The association process or wiring synchronization process places bundle devices according to the constraint and routes wiring to the bundle devices.

If conflicting constraints exist, the system tries to evaluate them to place the bundle device in the best location:

• Constraints on harnesses take priority over constraints on the design. Constraints on bundles take priority over constraints on harnesses and slots.

• Constraints that use literal strings take priority over constraints that use wild cards.

• If the system cannot evaluate the conflicting constraints successfully, it does not place the bundle device and a message is displayed on the Sync tab in the Output Window at the bottom of the application. For example: Device FUSE1 has multiple matching bundle placement constraints BUN1, BUN2.
