Connecting Overlapping Pins

You can create connections between overlapping pins on devices and connectors. You can connect all the overlapping pins or select certain pins and only connect those pins.

Procedure

  1. Drag the objects on the diagram so that the appropriate pins are overlapping.In Figure 69, PIN1 and PIN2 on device DEV1 are overlapping with PIN3 and PIN4, respectively, on device DEV2. Figure 69: Overlapping Pins

  2. To connect overlapping pins:To connect all the overlapping pins, select one of the objects (device or connector) to connect.

To connect certain overlapping pins only, select the overlapping pins to connect. Press the space bar and enter “Connect overlapping pins by Wire”, “Connect overlapping pins by Net”, or “Connect by Pin”.

Right-click the selected object or one of the selected pins and select Connect > By Wire, Connect > By Net or Connect > By Pin.

Note If a pin already has a connection to a second pin and you overlap it with a third pin, any new connection between the first and third pins must use the same type of conductor as used between the first and second pins. See Example 2.

Results

  • If you connected by wire or by net, new conductors are added to the diagram and to the Design Browser. You can now move the objects to the appropriate locations on the diagram.

  • If you connected by pin, the pins are mated to each other.

  • Any existing conductors that connect overlapping pins remain unchanged.

In the Figure 70, PIN1 and PIN2 on device DEV1 have been connected by nets with PIN3 and PIN4, respectively, on device DEV2.

Examples

Example

You can connect pins on multiple objects. In the example shown in Figure 71, PIN1 on device DEV3 overlaps with PIN2 on device DEV1 and PIN4 on device DEV2. Connecting the three overlapping pins by wire results in three wires being added, which can be seen clearly once the devices are moved apart.

In the example shown in Figure 72, PIN1 on device DEV3 remains unconnected, even though the connect by nets action was run for all overlapping pins. The two pins that PIN1 on device DEV3 overlaps with (PIN2 on device DEV1 and PIN4 on device DEV2) are already connected by a wire, so nets connecting those pins cannot be created. A net is added to connect PIN1 on device DEV1 and PIN3 on device DEV2, which can be seen clearly once the devices are moved apart.
