Adding a Backshell and Backshell Termination to a Connector

In Capital Logic Designer, you can add a backshell to a connector and define backshell terminations to which wires and shield conductors can connect. The backshell terminations are added to the connector in the Diagram window and are indicated by a backshell symbol.

Before you can add a backshell to a connector, a backshell symbol must be created in Capital Symbol Designer. See Overview of Backshells to create a backshell symbol.

Procedure

1. Right-click the connector and select Add Backshell. Alternatively, select the connector, press the space bar and enter Add Backshell.The Backshell dialog box is displayed.

2. Specify the following for the backshell:Name - Enter the name of the backshell in the Name field. See also “Default Object Names” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide. If required, select the Default Name check box to accept the default system name for the backshell or to manually edit it to one of your choosing subject to the following considerations: If there is NO composite naming defined for backshells, the dialog box displays the system generated name which will be assigned once the object is created.

If you clear the check box and specify a different name, this is assigned to the backshell.

If no action is taken, the system generated name is assigned to the backshell after the dialog box is closed.

If composite naming is defined for backshells, this is displayed in the text field. The field is still editable.

If you edit and specify a different name, this is assigned to the backshell.

If no action is taken, the composite name is assigned to the backshell after the dialog box is closed.

Symbol - From the Symbol tree, select the backshell symbol to use for the backshell terminations. The selected symbol is displayed in the panel to the right of the Symbol tree. You can select Show Origin to have the symbol origin indicated on the symbol. Note If you are using domains, only symbols from symbol libraries that are accessible in the current domain appear in the Symbol tree.

3. To specify the backshell terminations on the connector, type the name of the termination in the Name field of the Terminations section, and then click Add.The termination is listed in the window below the Name field. You can also add backshell terminations using one of the following methods. Press the space bar and enter Add Backshell Termination.

Right-click and select Add Backshell Termination.

Re-select the connector for which you are creating backshell terminations and press Ctrl+B.

Tip Pressing Ctrl+B is the quickest method of adding multiple instances of backshell terminations. Ensure that you have the connector selected and press Ctrl+B. You are presented with additional instances of the termination. As with the composite naming or default naming set at project level, the system increments the original name by one on each additional instance. You can accept these names or right-click and manually edit the names as required. You can also right-click the connector and select Edit Backshell. If the selected backshell has multiple different terminations a dialog box is displayed listing these terminations. Select the required termination and click OK. You can then add the termination as described in this procedure. To delete a backshell termination, right‑click it on the diagram or in the Design Browser window and select Delete.

4. Click the OK button to add the backshell to the connector. In the Design Browser window, the backshell is listed below the conductor and has the backshell indicator next to it. If you have defined terminations, a broken line indicates where you can add the termination to the connector in the Diagram window. Click the point on the broken line to add a termination. The line extends beyond the connector drawing. If you add the termination at a point outside of the connector, the connector drawing extends accordingly. If you have defined multiple terminations, you must place each termination. The backshell termination symbol is displayed at each termination and the terminations are listed under the backshell in the Design Browser window. If you have not defined any terminations, the backshell is not visible in the Diagram window. Note A backshell termination can appear at multiple locations on the connector. This is because the backshell symbol represents an available termination location but does not define the physical location of that termination. Therefore, if a termination name is displayed multiple times, it represents the same physical termination.
