Functional Approach

There are variant management advantages gained by adopting a Modular Composite design flow. A widely used application of this technique is termed “Customer-Specific Vehicles”, also known as KSK. In such business models, Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) list the different functions that a vehicle provides and customers can choose any given combination out of that list for a fully-configurable vehicle, for example heated seats and electric windows.

To achieve this on a harness by harness basis, customers design their harnesses using “Functional Modules” which correspond to vehicle functions. Once a configuration definition is determined, the required modules can be assembled into one harness.

The flow moves from the desired configuration, as specified under the Customer Specific Vehicle business model, through the design, engineering, and manufacture stages of the harness assembly process.
