Moving a Splice Manually

After synthesizing wiring and creating splices, you can move splices to preferred locations.

You can see the location of a splice in a diagram by clicking on it in the Design Browser (Design tab). The splice is then displayed in red in the diagram.

As well as moving a splice to a new location, you can use the Move Splice function to merge two splices that are on the same harness and are associated with the same signal. Note that a pigtail splice cannot be merged with another splice.

Restrictions and Limitations

  • You can move a splice out of a slot to a bundle, or to another slot, without needing to resynthesize splices and their connected wiring. If you move it from a slot to a bundle, you change the implementation from a junction connector to a splice. The splice will retain its attributes and properties and any connected wires remain connected.

  • You can move the splice into the harness containing all the connected wires or another slot on the same harness. You cannot move a splice if connected wires exit the slot to different harnesses.

  • To maintain a consistent signal route status, it is advised to prioritize moving the splices for shield signals to a junction slot before moving the splices of inner cores. This order is crucial because different splice sequences can result in redundant wiring and its subsequent deletion.

Procedure

  1. Right-click on the splice in the Design Browser (Design tab) and choose Move Splice. Alternatively, click the splice in the Design Browser (Design tab), and choose the Splice > Move action on the Home ribbon tab.You can perform this action to move a splice to the currently open diagram from another diagram. Note If you are moving a splice out of a slot, you can drag it from the Design Browser and drop it on the new location. When you do it this way, the cursor icon does not change as described in the following steps.

  2. Move the mouse cursor to the location where you want to place the splice and click once. The system automatically calculates the offset required as you move the splice to another point in the diagram and displays this offset by the cursor.See the Results section for a list of the locations to which you can move a splice and the results of doing so.

Results

You can move a splice to:

  • Another point on the harness The cursor changes to a splice with a line through it when positioned where the splice cannot be placed. When you position the cursor where the splice can be placed, the cursor is a black splice symbol .

  • A slot connector where it is converted into a multiple termination If you position the cursor over a slot connector, the cursor changes to a multiple termination symbol . If you place the splice here, it changes to a multiple termination and the splice is removed from the Design Browser (Design tab).  It is possible to change a multiple termination to a splice. See Converting a Multiple Termination to a Splice for more information.

  • A point across one inline pair to a harness that is connected directly adjacent to the harness from where the splice is being moved If you move the splice across an inline pair, the splice moves in the Design Browser (Design tab) to be under the harness on which it is now located. In addition, any required wires are created and necessary cavities are added to the inline pair. Note If you want to move the splice across more than one inline pair, hold down the SHIFT key on your keyboard when you choose the Move Splice option. You can then repeat the action of moving the splice across an inline pair. When you have finished moving the splice across inline pairs, press the Esc key on your keyboard.

  • A slot If you position the cursor over a slot, the cursor changes to a splice symbol in a box . If you place the splice in a slot, the pin map for the slot updates: When you move a splice to a slot, each wire connected to the splice is connected to a separate, available cavity on a slot connector.

If the slot has multiple slot connectors, the action will use the first connector with enough available cavities.

If you move a splice to a slot and that slot has a connector with a single cavity part number, the action creates a multiple termination on the cavity.

When you move a splice into a slot that contains either another splice or a device, the incoming splice may be merged with a splice or device. Whether or not the splice is merged depends on some rules: If the incoming splice belongs to the same signal as a splice already in the slot, and they are directly connected by a wire, you can choose whether or not to merge the splices (see note below).

						If the incoming splice belongs to the same signal as a splice already
							in the slot, and if the move will result in the splices sharing
							connectivity due to cavity count restrictions, the splices are
							merged.

If the incoming splice belongs to the same signal as a splice already in the slot, but they are not directly connected by a wire, the splices are not merged.

If the incoming splice belongs to the same signal as two splices already in the slot, and is directly connected to both by a wire, you can choose whether or not to merge the splices (see note below). The splices will be merged into the splice with the first alphanumeric name.

If the incoming splice is connected to a device already in the slot, the splice will be merged with the device.

Note In cases where you can choose whether or not to merge splices, a dialog box displays. If there are sufficient cavities available on the connector to which the splice is mapped to support not merging splices and connecting with a jumper wire, you can choose to merge or not merge the splices. However, if there are not enough cavities available to support this mapping, the only option available will be to merge.

The nature of the pin map update when you move directly connected splices belonging to the same signal into the same slot depends on whether or not the splices are merged: If the splices are merged, the wires that were connected to the incoming splice will be mapped to the pre-existing splice in the slot. The wire that previously connected the two splices will be deleted.

If the splices are not merged, the incoming splice will be placed in the slot as a distinct splice. The wire that connected the incoming splice to the splice in the slot is used as a jumper wire to connect the two splices. The jumper wire will not be a multiple termination.
