Creating a Shared Device
Based on a Symbol
You can create a shared device based on a device symbol directly (without the need to create and promote a non-shared device).
Prerequisites
- The symbol must exist in the symbol library. See “Creating a New Symbol” in the Capital Symbol Designer User Guide.
Procedure
Select the symbol in the Symbol Browser. Right-click in the Symbol Browser and select Create Shared Device. The Create Shared Device Dialog Box is displayed.
On the Shared Device tab select Create New. Specify a name and revision for the object.Note If you select Share Into you can associate a symbol with an existing shared device. See Associating a Symbol With a Shared Device or Connector. If the symbol has any property or attribute values that conflict with the values on the shared device, the Resolve Conflicting Attributes and Properties Dialog Box is displayed.
Optionally, on the Associate Pins tabs you can edit the associations that are automatically created between pins in the Symbol list and pins in the Shared Object list.Note All the pins in the Symbol list must be associated with a pin in the Shared Object list, otherwise the OK button will be unavailable and you cannot continue with the object promotion.
Tip To create an association between two pins, select a pin in the Symbol list, and then in the Shared Object list, select the pin to associate it with and click Associate. Alternatively, click Associate All to automatically associate all pins in the two lists. To remove an association between two pins, select the two pins and click Disassociate. To remove all associations click Disassociate All. To add a new pin to the Shared Object list, click New. The Add Shared Pins Dialog Box is displayed. To delete or rename a pin in the Shared Object list, select it and click Delete or Rename.
Optionally, you can use the Pin Reservations tab to set one or more of the pins to be unrestricted. Pins with reservation status Automatic or Reserved are listed in the Automatic Reservations list. Select a pin and click Add to move it to the Unrestricted Pins list. To make all the pins unrestricted, click Add All. See “Pin Reservation Status” in the Capital Project Manager User Guide for automatic, reserved, and unrestricted pins.
Click OK.
Results
The shared object is created and is added to the Shared Objects Browser.
Now that you have created the shared object definition for the shared device you can add instances of the shared device to designs. See Adding an Instance of a Shared Device or Connector as a Parameterized Object or Adding an Instance of a Shared Device as a Symbol.
